Shohei sends 'em home happy

Good Morning! Here’s what happened in the world of sports on Wednesday, April 2.

MLB

Let’s get to the recaps, shall we?

  • Ohtani and the Dodgers are undefeated, the first defending champs to begin the season 8-0. On the other side, the Atlanta Braves are 0-7. No team has ever made the playoffs after starting the year with that record.

  • Just one other undefeated team remains in Major League Baseball: the Padres moved to 7-0 to start the year after beating Cleveland 5-2. Jackson Merrill (more on him later) hit a two-run home run to cap off the big day.

  • The Cardinals lost two consecutive games in extra innings to the Los Angeles Angels. Yesterday, Ivan Herrera made sure that streak ended. The St. Louis catcher crushed three home runs and the Cards won 12-5.

  • Texas beat Cincinnati 1-0 for the second game in a row yesterday. But take a look at this play by Elly De La Cruz. Sometimes the Reds shortstop does things on a baseball field that are hard to believe:

NHL

I know there’s more going on around the National Hockey League, but with most of the playoff spots spoken for, the biggest storyline remains Alexander Ovechkin and his chase of the all-time goal-scoring record. While Ovechkin’s Capitals lost 4-1 to the Hurricanes last night, that “1” counted for quite a lot:

NBA

There aren’t many big moment’s from last night’s games, but that gives us space to highlight something from yesterday’ issue:

At the time of publishing, Nikola Jokic has 23 points at halftime, leading all scorers in a 53-52 game against the Minnesota Timberwolves. I’m on the east coast so unfortunately there won’t be a final tally that I can report this morning, but might be a fun box score to check before you keep reading.

I hope you took that advice, but in case you didn’t– Nikola Jokic finished the game with 61 points and a triple-double! An incredible performance, although the Nuggets lost to the Timberwolves 140-139 in double overtime. I’m ready for the playoffs!

One notable performance from last night– Anthony Davis! The Mavericks got a big win last night thanks to 34 points and 15 rebounds from AD, including a game-winner with three seconds remaining.

NOTEWORTHY NEWS

A trio of big contract extensions in Major League Baseball highlight the day’s headlines. The Padres signed second-year centerfielder Jackson Merrill to a nine-year, $135 million extension. Rookie Kristian Campbell reached an agreement with the Boston Red Sox for eight years, with various escalators and options to determine the final value. And two-time all-star Ketel Marte signed a deal that will keep him with the Arizona Diamondbacks for seven more seasons.
