These stars aren't fooling around
Good Morning! Here’s what happened in the world of sports on Monday, April 1st.
NBA
At the time of publishing, Nikola Jokic has 23 points at halftime, leading all scorers in a 53-52 game against the Minnesota Timberwolves. I’m on the east coast so unfortunately there won’t be a final tally that I can report this morning, but might be a fun box score to check before you keep reading.
What I can confidently say is that no one was better than Steph Curry last night. The greatest shooter of all-time made 12 threes and finished the game with 52 points, 10 rebounds, eight assists, and five steals. Golden State beat Memphis 134-125. It never gets old watching Steph Curry play basketball:
MLB
Guess what? They played baseball again yesterday:
New Cub Kyle Tucker hit a home run last night for the fourth consecutive game. Chicago led the Athletics 6-4 in the 7th (and if I had to put money on it, I’d wager they eventually won the game).
Wyatt Langford hit a solo home run in the first inning, and that was all the support Nathan Eovaldi needed. The Rangers starter threw a four-hit, complete game shutout with just 99 pitches. A classic throwback performance from one of the more underrated pitchers in the game– Texas beat Cincinnati 1-0.
Dustin May hasn’t appeared in a game in 685 days. After multiple surgeries and rehabs, the Dodgers pitcher made a triumphant return to the mound, throwing five innings with no earned runs and six strikeouts. LA is losing 1-0 to Atlanta at the moment, but a huge success for Dustin May regardless of the outcome.
NHL
We’re tracking two amazing hockey stories at the moment–
First, Alexander Ovechkin is now just four goals away from the all-time record. The Capitals legend scored number 891 in a 4-3 victory over the Bruins.
And how about the St. Louis Blues! Down 1-0 against Detroit with less than a minute remaining, Jordan Kyrou tied the game up. St. Louis then won in overtime, extending their win streak to 10 games in a row. There’s a long way to go, but this is Blues team is starting to look familiar…
NOTEWORTHY NEWS
They listened! Maybe the NFL reads the Remix, because the rules committee voted yesterday to use virtual first-down technology starting next season. Who knows if the system will work properly, but at least this is a step in the right direction. The NFL also changed the overtime rules during the regular season so both teams will get at least one possession. There’s been no decision yet on banning the Tush Push– that vote was… pushed… until later this spring.
Maryland has moved quickly and found their next basketball coach: Buzz Williams. The head coach at Texas A&M since 2019, Williams made the NCAA tournament each of the last three seasons.
Longtime St. Louis Cardinal Lance Lynn announced his retirement yesterday. A 13-year veteran who pitched for six teams, Lynn was a two-time all-star who finished top-five in Cy Young voting multiple seasons. Congratulations to Lynn on a fantastic career!
The transfer portal just open but I think we may have already found a winner for best move of the offseason. Meechie Johnson began his collegiate career with two years at Ohio State. He transferred to South Carolina for one year before returning to Ohio State last season. After entering the transfer portal again, Meechie Johnson announced yesterday that his sixth and final season will be spent at… South Carolina. Simply amazing.
