It's a Sports Equinox!
Good Morning! Today is Monday, October 28th. Here’s what happened over the weekend in the world of sports.
MLB
The Remix is still recovering after a historic game one on Friday night– in case you missed it, check out our special Saturday morning recap. Regardless, here’s where we stand as the World Series heads to New York:
Game two started off with a bang, as NLCS MVP Tommy Edman and Yankee superstar Juan Soto traded solo home runs. Although there were offensive fireworks, this game was won by Dodgers starter Yoshinobu Yamamoto. Soto’s homer was the only hit allowed by Yamamoto, who threw 6.1 dominant innings.
Teoscar Hernandez and Freddie Freeman hit back-to-back home runs off New York’s starter Carlos Rodon, and after some tense moments closing out the ninth, LA won 4-2.
And for those who watched the game, you’ll be relieved to know that Shohei Ohtani is ok. We last saw Ohtani leave the field in the eighth inning with a partially dislocated shoulder after he was thrown out attempting to steal second. Luckily, Shohei is in the lineup tonight. Crisis averted.
We know the status of the future NL MVP, but what’s happening with the likely MVP of the AL? Aaron Judge is 1-9 with six strikeouts in the World Series. He’s just 6-36 during this postseason. The pressure is mounting on the Yankee captain.
In all best-of-seven postseason series, teams taking a 2-0 lead have gone on to win the series 77 of 92 times (84%)
Under the current 2-3-2 format, teams winning Games 1 and 2 at home have gone on to take the series 45 of 56 times (80%)

NFL
What a crazy weekend of pro football! No teams were on a bye this week, and of the 14 games played yesterday, nine were decided by one score. Let’s run through some highlights, shall we?
Just when you thought things couldn’t get worse for the Jets… New York scored a touchdown with just under three minutes left to take a five point lead, but the 1-6 New England Patriots, playing with a backup QB, rallied to win the game. Both the Jets and Pats are 2-6 on the season, but the vibes around each team are remarkably different.
The Packers beat the Jaguars 30-27 on a last-second field goal, the Cardinals beat the Dolphins 28-27 on a last-second field goal, and the Falcons held off the Buccaneers 31-26 despite missing a final-minute field goal.
With Deshaun Watson injured, Jameis Winston is the new starting quarterback for the Cleveland Browns. I think Winston has won the job. Jameis, the Browns defense, and a rejuvenated Cleveland team played a fantastic game as the Browns upset the Ravens 29-24. This is a must-see game-winning touchdown pass:

The Detroit Lions absolutely crushed the Tennessee Titans yesterday. Sure, there were some other games that may have been more exciting. But I think people should know about the 52-14 Detroit victory. The Lions controlled all facets of this game, and have officially staked a claim as the best team in the NFC
San Francisco wrapped up the evening against Dallas on Sunday Night Football. George Kittle capped off a fantastic National Tight Ends Day (yes, this is a real holiday, and 16 touchdowns were scored by tight ends yesterday) with six catches for 128 yards and a touchdown. The San Francisco defense added two interceptions off Dak Prescott and the 49ers beat the Cowboys 30-24.
Finally, the play of the year from the Bears and Commanders game. Chicago battled back from a 12-0 second half deficit, punching in a go-ahead touchdown with 25 seconds left. But in a matchup of the top two picks from last year’s draft, it was Washington QB Jayden Daniels who got the ball last:

Unless you’re a Bears fan, it’s also worth seeing the winning touchdown from this more unusual perspective:
NCAA FOOTBALL
It was a good weekend to be a favorite in college football. Even so, there were some pretty major results:
Boise State survived UNLV on Friday night with a 29-24 victory. The Broncos remain the favorite to be the team to make the playoffs from outside the power four conferences.
Texas A&M pulled off the big upset of the weekend, taking down LSU 38-23 in College Station. The Aggies are in first place in the SEC.
Elsewhere in the SEC, it was a return to normalcy. Texas beat Vanderbilt and Alabama took care of Missouri.
Notre Dame cruised to a 51-14 victory over Navy, handing the Midshipmen their first loss of the year. However, Oregon, Penn State, Miami, and Indiana continued their undefeated seasons, as did…
BYU! The Cougars are winning games with awesome plays like this one:

NBA
There’s a lot of great young talent in the NBA… and yet the three biggest stories of this past weekend’s games are about the veterans:
LeBron James was at his best in Saturday’s comeback victory over Sacramento. The King had a triple-double that included a game-changing 16-point fourth quarter.
Kevin Durant became the eighth player in NBA history with 29,000 points. Naturally, the milestone basket was a pull-up three over two defenders.
Steph Curry left the Warrior’s loss to the Clippers with an injured ankle. We’ll keep you posted with any injury updates.
I know I said three stories, but I can’t help myself… enjoy some Chris Paul-Wemby highlights:
NHL
Don’t worry hockey fans, I didn’t forget about you:
Poor San Jose… after nine games, the Sharks remain winless on the season. And top prospect Macklin Celebrini remains out with a lower body injury. Rebuilds take time, I guess.
On the flip side, the Winnipeg Jets remain undefeated! The Jets continued their hot start to the season with a 5-3 victory over the Flames on Saturday.
Happy Birthday Leon Draisitl! The star forward scored twice on his big day, including the game-winning goal in overtime to beat the Red Wings 3-2.
SOCCER
FC Barcelona won El Clasico in a dominant manner on Saturday, stomping on Real Madrid 4-0. Robert Lewandowski scored two goals for Barça and teenage-phenom Lamine Yamal added one, too.
NOTEWORTHY NEWS
The Indiana Fever have parted ways with head coach Christie Sides. With Caitlin Clark on the roster, I don’t think they’ll have a problem attracting applicants.
It was just an exhibition, but Duke men’s basketball beat Arizona State 103-47 yesterday. It seems the Blue Devils are destined to either win a championship by a thousand points or unceremoniously exit March Madness before the second weekend. Then again, this was only an exhibition.
