Yoshi goes nine, Kelly heads for the exits

Good Morning! Today is Monday, October 27. Here’s what happened over the weekend in the world of sports.

NFL

No one had a worse Sunday on the gridiron than me… I lost all five of my fantasy football matchups this week. There’s even one league where I’m losing by over 100 points! But no one cares about that, you’re here for real football. Let’s get into it:

  • New York pulled off a surprising win two weeks ago, but Philly was back in control in yesterday’s NFC East rematch. Saquan Barkley ran for what felt like two million yards as the Eagles beat the Giants 38-20. New York also suffered a big blow when rookie running back Cam Skattebo was carted off the field with a brutal ankle injury.

  • Defeated no more! The New York Jets are in the win column after an impressive fourth quarter comeback against the Cincinnati Bengals. Running back Breece Hall threw the game-winning touchdown to secure a 39-38 victory.

  • Speaking of upsets, the Atlanta Falcons did some sort of Freaky Friday thing with the Miami Dolphins. That’s the only explanation I have for this one… Kirk Cousins struggled mightily and the Falcons got rocked 34-10 by Miami.

  • But there was a bigger blowout later in the afternoon. The Cowboys got bucked by the Broncos, as Denver sent Dallas packing with a 44-24 defeat. Bo Nix threw four touchdowns in the win.

  • Finally, we arrive at Sunday Night Football. Aaron Rodgers was making his first start in Green Bay as a member of the opposition. For some reason the Steelers decided to wear these really garish yellow uniforms… maybe they thought it would be distracting? Anyway, Jordan Love and the Packers put up 28 points in the second half en route to a 35-25 win.

NCAA FOTBALL

Indiana, Vanderbilt, Georgia Tech, BYU, and Virginia are all ranked in the top 15 in this week’s AP Poll. In football. I’ll tell you some scores here in a moment, but take a second to let that sentence really sink in. This is quite a season…

  • Two ranked SEC matchups highlighted the weekend slate: (3) Texas A&M went on the road and crushed (20) LSU 49-25. (8) Ole Miss also won on the road, beating (13) Oklahoma 34-26. That LSU game had some big consequences that I’ll discuss a few paragraphs down…

  • Drew Mestamaker might be the best player you don’t know about. The redshirt freshman quarterback at North Texas threw for a school record 608 yards in this weekend’s win against Charlotte. Mestamaker is a big reason why the Mean Green are 7-1 on the season, with a real shot at winning the American Conference and maybe even an outside chance of sneaking into the College Football Playoff.

  • Last but not least, you have to see the wild finish between (10) Vanderbilt and (15) Mizzou:

WORLD SERIES

The 2025 Fall Classic is underway! After two games in Toronto, the series is tied at one game apiece. Let’s catch up on the action before game three begins tonight in Los Angeles:

GAME ONE

Dodgers ace Blake Snell did not have his best stuff. Blue Jays rookie Trey Yesavage didn’t either. And yet this game was tied 2-2 until the sixth inning, when the Toronto lineup finally got to face the LA bullpen. Addison Barger hit the first pinch-hit grand slam in World Series history as the home team put up a nine spot and roared out to an insurmountable lead in game one. Alejandro Kirk went 3-3 with a home run, too, and Toronto won the opener 11-4.

GAME TWO

Yoshinobu Yamamoto gave up four hits, hit a batter, and allowed one run in the first three innings. But from that point forward, he was flawless. Yamamoto retired 20 Blue Jays in a row, absolutely dominating the opposing lineup on his way to an historic complete game victory. That’s back-to-back postseason complete games for Yoshi! I don’t know what to say except that it was extraordinary watching him pitch. Will Smith hit a home run and drove in three runs as the Dodger battery powered up their team to a 5-1 victory in game two.

COLLEGE SOCCER

Yeah, you read that right– for one day only, the Remix is featuring a college soccer section. Please enjoy watching these two incredible highlights:

NEWSWORTHY

As I teased earlier, the LSU loss was more than a number in the win column. Following the disappointing result and a reportedly heated meeting with the athletic director, head coach Brian Kelly has been fired. Kelly ends his LSU tenure with a 34-14 record, but went just 5-11 against ranked opponents. Each of his three predecessors won national championships, too.

But not all coaching news is bad– the Baltimore Orioles are set to hire Guardians associate manager Craig Albernaz as their new manager for next season. This will be Albernaz’s first time in charge of a big league ballclub.

Finally, a sad announcement today after retired Jets center Nick Mangold passed away this weekend at the age of 41 due to complications from kidney disease. "Nick represented the best of us in regard to professionalism, humility and performance. But inclusion was my favorite trait. His ability to see everyone's value and his willingness to meet you where you were at. I'll miss my friend until we meet again,” said former teammate Bart Scott.
