Winning at all costs... plus one tie

Good Morning! Today is Monday, September 29. Here’s what happened over the weekend in the world of sports.

NFL

Dak Prescott was dominant last night but I’m not going to talk about the Packers and Cowboys game because it ended in a tie. 40-40? Are you serious? Moving along, there were some quality football games yesterday…

  • A Pyrrhic victory for the New York Giants yesterday. Rookie QB Jaxson Dart wasn’t perfect, but he showed lots of promise in leading his team to a huge upset over the previously undefeated Chargers. However, star wide receiver Malik Nabers was carted off the field with what is believed to be a torn ACL.

  • Over in Dublin, DK Metcalf and the Steelers led the Vikings 24-6 in the fourth quarter. Minnesota mounted a late comeback but fell just short, losing 24-21. They’ll remain in Europe for another week to play in London next Sunday. It’s not a punishment for the poor first half showing, that game was previously scheduled.

  • How about Jacksonville! The Jaguars scored on a punt return and forced four turnovers en route to a 26-21 win over the San Francisco 49ers. They’re now tied atop the AFC South with the Indianapolis Colts, who dropped their first game of the season yesterday. Indy wideout AD Mitchell cost his team dearly when this should-be touchdown turned into a fumble (below). Meanwhile, the Rams are back in the win column.

  • Kansas City has fully recovered from their 0-2 start… the Chiefs looked like their old selves, absolutely dominating the Ravens 37-20. Baltimore falls to 1-3 as their defense continues to struggle.

  • Caleb Williams and the Chicago offense struggled early on against the Raiders, while rookie RB Ashton Jeanty broke free for 138 yards and a touchdown, plus two receiving TDs. But the Bears hung around and eventually battled back, taking a 25-24 lead with 1:34 remaining. Geno Smith drove Vegas into position for a game-winning field goal… but it was blocked! Chicago won for the second week in a row.

NCAA FOTBALL

Things are starting to heat up!

  • I have to start with my favorite game of the weekend. (6) Oregon went into Happy Valley and took on the intimidating white-out at (3) Penn State. They allowed the home team to come back from 14 points in the fourth quarter, but the Ducks met the moment in double overtime:

  • Now we’ll go way back to Friday night, where the Virginia Cavaliers pulled off the upset against (8) Florida State. The Hoos also won in double overtime, and celebrated with one of the most memorable field stormings you’ll ever see.

  • Three great ranked-vs-ranked matchups rounded out the stellar Saturday slate of games: (23) Illinois rebounded from a blowout loss at Indiana to take down (21) USC on a last-second field goal… Kirby Smart fell to 1-7 against Alabama, as the (17) Crimson Tide went to Athens and upset (5) Georgia 24-21… And Landry Kiffin and (13) Ole Miss remained undefeated with a confident 24-19 win over (5) LSU. This week’s new Remix Heisman dark horse candidate is Rebels QB Trinidad Chambliss.

  • Finally, we have one of the worst missed calls of the season. (16) Georgia Tech survived in overtime against Wake Forest, but should the Yellow Jackets even had a chance in the extra frame?

MLB

What a glorious final weekend! We saw walk-off wins clinch playoff spots, the final moments of epic collapses, and some good old-fashioned rivalry shenanigans. Way back in March, we previewed the 2025 season. After 162 games, all those predictions came true and we’ve arrived at the start of another postseason. Check your inbox tomorrow morning for a full playoff preview… for now, here’s a look at the bracket:

RYDER CUP

I never would have thought that the prestigious event pitting the United States vs Europe would land in the fourth position of today’s Remix, but that tells you all you need to know about the lack of drama over the weekend at Bethpage Black. A late charge on Sunday made things interesting, but the visiting Europeans jumped out to a big lead Friday morning and never looked back. Europe won the Ryder Cup on American soil for the first time since 2012, out-putting and out-strategizing the Americans throughout the entire three-day event. Even a strange rule about injury withdrawals went the way of the victors (pun intended)! While a little over serious, I think this article captures the spirit of the weekend– both on and off the course– quite well. The competition will continue again in Ireland in 2027.

WNBA

The Indiana Fever are tied 2-2 with the Las Vegas Aces, where they will take on the Phoenix Mercury in the WNBA Finals. Unfortunately, the big story from the W concerns the Minnesota Lynx and questionable officiating at the highest stage of the game. The top-seeded Lynx were eliminated by the Mercury in four games with their coach, Cheryl Reeve, suspended and their best player, Napheesa Collier, out with an injury. This comes after a controversial no-call late in game three where the ball was stolen from Collier. Reeve received a technical and was ejected, causing her to unleash some strong comments in her post-game press conference. Reeve has received support from fellow coaches around the league; hopefully through the Finals and moving forward into the future, the quality of the officiating can match the basketball being played on court.

NEWSWORTHY

Bad Bunny will be headlining this year’s Super Bowl Halftime Show! He had this to say about the honor: “What I'm feeling goes beyond myself. It's for those who came before me and ran countless yards so I could come in and score a touchdown... this is for my people, my culture, and our history. Ve y dile a tu abuela, que seremos el HALFTIME SHOW DEL SUPER BOWL.” Not familiar with Bad Bunny? Check him out w the season premiere of Saturday Night Live this weekend.

Veteran big man Al Horford has agreed to a multi-year deal with the Golden State Warriors. It’s not yet official, as the Warriors still have to work through some contract issues with restricted free agent Jonathan Kuminga (no idea how that one is going to be resolved), but as preseason gets underway, expect an announcement soon.

Pete Alonso will be opting out of his contract with the New York Mets and entering the free agent market. I have no idea if this is related to the team’s spectacular collapse and missing out on the playoffs. Could just be looking for more money.

After tearing her ACL last March, JuJu Watkins confirmed she will miss the entirety of the upcoming USC basketball season to focus on her recovery. The game will certainly miss having one of the most talented players in the game out on the court.

Get ready for another new streaming platform in sports… Netflix will broadcast the Yankees vs Giants on Opening Day, as well the Home Run Derby next season for Major League Baseball. It’s the first domino to fall as the league splits up ESPN’s old package and sells it to other distributors.

Sam Pittman has been fired as head coach of Arkansas football. He went 32-34 during his tenure with the Razorbacks.

“Cam [Young] and I just wished that we gave them something to cheer for instead of people to cheer against. I think that was kind of the main consensus of the last two days, that we weren't giving them enough to cheer for, and they were just trying to help us win. I guess that's the New York fans for you,” –Justin Thomas

"I chirped back a few times because it got to me a few times, but we tried to handle everything that came our way with class and poise, and for the most part, I felt like we did that. It was a rough week for all of us, but at the same time, we shut them up by our performance." –Rory McIlroy

That’s all for now– see you on Thursday!
