What's going on in Vegas?

Good Morning! Here’s what happened in the world of sports on Wednesday, September 25.

MLB

Bonus Week isn’t catching on as a name, but the quality of baseball has been super high. Here are yesterday’s highlights:

WNBA

Although each first round series ended in a 2-0 sweep, the WNBA playoffs have been very exciting so far. Two games took place last night, setting up the second semifinal matchups and ending the seasons of two very popular players:

  • In game one, the Connecticut Sun took down the Indiana Fever 87-81. Caitlin Clark and the Fever made a late charge and actually held a lead with two minutes remaining, but DeWanna Bonner and Marina Mabrey hit two clutch threes and the Sun never looked back.

  • The late game was not as close, as the Minnesota Lynx beat the Phoenix Mercury 101-88. Naphesa Collier tied a WNBA playoff record with 42 points and all five Lynx starters scored double-digits. While not official, this was likely the last game of three-time WNBA champion and six-time gold medalist Diana Taurasi’s career.

NOTEWORTHY NEWS

UNLV is 3-0 and received votes to be ranked in the top 25 this week. Their starting quarterback announced yesterday that he is leaving the team. Matthew Sluka released a statement explaining that he will be using a redshirt this season because of unfulfilled commitments from the university. While Sluka did not explicitly state the commitments, reports have reasoned that he’s leaving because UNLV isn’t paying him. The school responded by denying the claims of their former QB, so we’ll see if Sluka ends up taking any legal action. Welcome to college football in the year 2024.

The crucial series between the Mets and Braves this week has been postponed due to inclement weather caused by Hurricane Helene. The games are scheduled to be played as a doubleheader on Monday, the day after the regular season is supposed to end. It’s now possible Atlanta or New York plays a game Sunday, two games Monday to make the playoffs, and then their first playoff game on Tuesday. It looks likely that both teams will be at a heavy disadvantage in the postseason.
