What's going on in Vegas?
Good Morning! Here’s what happened in the world of sports on Wednesday, September 25.
MLB
Bonus Week isn’t catching on as a name, but the quality of baseball has been super high. Here are yesterday’s highlights:
Our Detroit Tigers just keep on winning! Yesterday’s 7-1 victory was capped off by the MLB debut of Jackson Jobe, who closed out the game in his first appearance. Detroit has now won eight of their last nine games– their magic number to make the playoffs is down to three.
Three superstars had stellar nights last night. Jose Ramirez had a home run, a double, and a triple to lead the Guardians to a win over the Reds. Zac Gallen struck out 11 in a very important 8-2 victory for the Arizona Diamondbacks. And Aaron Judge hit his 57th home run of the year. It’s the fourth straight game that Judge has homered. He’s also the first player since 2009 with 140+ RBIs in a season. (TRIVIA: Can you name the two first baseman who accomplished the feat in ‘09? Answer revealed at the bottom) Despite the individual greatness, Judge and the Yankees fell to the Orioles 9-7.
How about those White Sox! Facing a historic 121st loss, Chicago won their second straight game. Andrew Benintendi knocked a game-winning single in the 10th inning to beat the Angels 4-3.
Once again, the Dodgers and Padres closed out the evening with a thriller. When Fernando Tatis hit a home run in the 5th to tie the game at 3-3, it looked like the Padres might narrow the gap to one game in the NL West. But Shohei Ohtani stepped up to the plate in the next inning and drove home Will Smith to regain a 4-3 lead. The bullpens shut everything down and new Dodger closer/trade deadline acquisition Michael Kopech slammed the door in the ninth. LA’s magic number is down to 2.
WNBA
Although each first round series ended in a 2-0 sweep, the WNBA playoffs have been very exciting so far. Two games took place last night, setting up the second semifinal matchups and ending the seasons of two very popular players:
In game one, the Connecticut Sun took down the Indiana Fever 87-81. Caitlin Clark and the Fever made a late charge and actually held a lead with two minutes remaining, but DeWanna Bonner and Marina Mabrey hit two clutch threes and the Sun never looked back.
The late game was not as close, as the Minnesota Lynx beat the Phoenix Mercury 101-88. Naphesa Collier tied a WNBA playoff record with 42 points and all five Lynx starters scored double-digits. While not official, this was likely the last game of three-time WNBA champion and six-time gold medalist Diana Taurasi’s career.
NOTEWORTHY NEWS
UNLV is 3-0 and received votes to be ranked in the top 25 this week. Their starting quarterback announced yesterday that he is leaving the team. Matthew Sluka released a statement explaining that he will be using a redshirt this season because of unfulfilled commitments from the university. While Sluka did not explicitly state the commitments, reports have reasoned that he’s leaving because UNLV isn’t paying him. The school responded by denying the claims of their former QB, so we’ll see if Sluka ends up taking any legal action. Welcome to college football in the year 2024.
The crucial series between the Mets and Braves this week has been postponed due to inclement weather caused by Hurricane Helene. The games are scheduled to be played as a doubleheader on Monday, the day after the regular season is supposed to end. It’s now possible Atlanta or New York plays a game Sunday, two games Monday to make the playoffs, and then their first playoff game on Tuesday. It looks likely that both teams will be at a heavy disadvantage in the postseason.
