Welcome to New York

Good Morning! Here’s what happened in the world of sports on Monday, October 14.

MLB

The day began in Los Angeles, but as the bold font at the top of the page tells you, Monday was all about the city that never sleeps. The Dodgers pitching staff came into game two with a record-tying 33 consecutive scoreless innings. Francisco Lindor promptly ended that streak with a leadoff solo home run in the first inning. When Lindor came up to bat again with runners on base in the second inning, LA manager Dave Roberts intentionally walked him. Mark Vientos took that decision personally:

Although the Dodgers rallied, Edwin Diaz and the Mets bullpen held strong. New York tied the series with a 7-3 victory.

And that takes us to Yankee Stadium for the start of the ALCS. It didn’t take long for the home team to take control of this one– Juan Soto got the scoring started with a solo homer in the third inning. Guardians reliever Joey Cantillo gave up two more runs on a combination of walks and wild pitches, and that was all she wrote. Giancarlo Stanton added his second homer of the postseason with a deep shot in the 7th, and the New York bullpen slammed the door on a late rally to win game one 5-2.

NFL

The action from the Big Apple continued on Monday Night Football, as the Bills took on the Jets. The star of this one was a yellow flag thrown by the refs: the two teams combined for a whopping 22 penalties. Ultimately, Buffalo won the game 23-20. Here’s what stood out:

  • It was an up-and-down night for Aaron Rodgers. On one hand, he threw for 294 yards and two touchdowns, including this ridiculous Hail Mary at the end of the first half. On the other, Rodgers threw a crucial game-ending interception with two minutes remaining. Yes, the receiver fell down and the defensive back made an amazing play. But there is no margin for error on the New York Jets, and with the head coach fired this week, all eyes are on the QB to turn the ship around. It also didn’t help that Greg Zuerlein missed two field goals– although the Bills also missed a kick of their own.

  • Buffalo moves to 4-2, adding a tally to the win column after back-to-back defeats. New York falls to 2-4, this being their third straight loss.

  • Josh Allen was once again the best player on the field, throwing for 215 yards and two touchdowns, while adding another score on the ground. The surprise of the night was backup running back Ray Davis, who filled in for the injured James Cook. Davis ran for 97 yards and caught three passes for 55 yards– including this crazy completion on a broken play:

Let’s get to the action on the ice! I’ll give you one guess what city we start off in…

  • Both the New York Rangers and New York Islanders were big winners last night. The Rangers took down the Red Wings 4-1, while the Islanders stormed into Colorado and beat the Avalanche 6-2.

  • Well, the UHC is no longer undefeated. Utah lost their first game ever last night, falling 3-0 to the New Jersey Devils. Sorry Salt Lake City… it was going to happen eventually.

  • The game of the night was in Ottawa, as the Senators battled the LA Kings into overtime. After 15 total goals– 15!– the home team emerged with a victory.

NOTEWORTHY NEWS

Joel Embiid disclosed during an interview yesterday that he, “would probably never play back-to-backs the rest of [his] career.” The 76ers big man is focused on staying as healthy as possible for a deep postseason run. While the decision makes sense from that standpoint, it’s disappointing to hear one of the biggest stars in basketball choose not to take the court every night.

The first official AP poll for the 2024-25 NCAA men’s basketball season has been released. Kansas has been voted preseason number one, while two-time defending champ UConn starts off at three. Keep an eye on Rutgers at 25, as two of the projected top-three picks in next year’s NBA draft play for the Scarlet Knights.

Utah quarterback Cam Rising is out for the season with a leg injury. The oft-injured Rising has shown tremendous ability through his college career, but this will be the second season in a row where he is forced to stay on the sidelines. According to Utah head coach Kyle Whittingham, it’s possible Rising applies for a medical redshirt and comes back for his eighth year of college football in 2025.
