Welcome to Feast Week!
Good Morning! Today is Monday, November 25. Here’s what happened over the weekend in the world of sports.
NFL
Sunday recaps? Sunday recaps:
We begin in the fourth quarter in Houston, where it looked like the Texans had pulled away. Titans QB Will Levis had just throwm a 65-yard pick-six, and the Texans kicked a field goal to go up 27-23. But Tennessee tight end Chig Okonkwo got loose for a 70-yard touchdown, Houston missed a field goal, and CJ Stroud was sacked for a safety to end the game. The Titans upset the Texans, 32-27.
Most weeks, this would have been the craziest ending to a football game. Minnesota led Chicago 24-10 going into the fourth quarter. They led 27-16 with less than two minutes remaining! But the Bears roared back, scoring a touchdown and a two-point conversion, recovering an onside kick and then tying the game with a 48-yard field goal as time expired. Alas, rookie QB Caleb Williams ran out of magic in overtime. The Vikings tried their best to give the game away, but they ended up with a 30-27 victory.
Four touchdowns and a field goal in the final three minutes of a football game? That’s not just what happens when I play the NCAA Football video game, it’s also the real-life box score of the Cowboys and Commanders game. Pick your favorite highlight: the 99-yard kick-return touchdown featuring an awesome spin move, the suprising onside-kick return for a touchdown, or the missed game-tying extra point. Personally, I loved the Terry McLaurin touchdown (below), although Washington ended up just short in their comeback. Dallas won a wild one 34-26:

It wasn’t surprising that the Kansas City Chiefs beat the Carolina Panthers. But no one really thought it would require a game-winning field goal as time expired. Bryce Young and Carolina put up a good fight. As usual, Mahomes and the Chiefs did just enough to win, this time by a score of 30-27.
Two scores stood out from the afternoon slate: the Seattle Seahawks won an ugly game over the Arizona Cardinals 16-6, and the 49ers got crushed by the Green Bay Packers 38-10. It was an odd week for the NFC West, where every team has either five or six wins. Speaking of the division…
…the Los Angeles Rams hosted the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday Night Football. A close game early turned into the Saquan Barkley show. Philly’s star running back ran for 255 yards and two touchdowns, wearing down the LA defense and winning the ballgame almost single-handedly for the Eagles. Barkley’s 255 rush yards is the ninth-most in a game in NFL history. Philadelphia won 37-20:

NCAA FOOTBALL
After a week of angst concerning playoff-worthy teams and strength of schedule, I believe the past weekend taught us a very valuable lesson: there are definitely not 12 teams worthy of being in the playoffs. Prepare yourself for the carnage that was week 13:
Let’s start with the one expected result: (6) Notre Dame ended the undefeated season of (19) Army, winning 49-14.
(2) Ohio State was able to take care of business, too. The Buckeyes overcame a slow start to hand undefeated (5) Indiana their first loss of the season. The Hoosiers lost 38-15, and the critics were getting loud. Could you really put a one-loss Indiana in the 12-team playoff over a two-loss but supposedly much stronger SEC team?
And that’s where the chaos began: (9) Ole Miss was upset 24-17 by Florida. Rebels QB Jaxon Dart threw two interceptions in the final three minutes of the game. Then, (7) Alabama got rocked 24-3 at Oklahoma. Looks like the three-loss Tide will be Rolling right out of the top 12. Finally, one of the greatest games of the year took place in Auburn. The Tigers upset (15) Texas A&M 43-41 in quadruple overtime!
Not to be outdone, the Big 12 gave us some of their own chaos: Kansas became the first team with a losing record to win three straight games over ranked teams, taking down (16) Colorado 37-21. But (21) Arizona State gets to claim the craziest finish of the season. I honestly don’t know how to explain the final five plays of the Sun Devils’ 28-23 upset over (14) BYU– if you want a great breakdown, Awful Announcing (the name is misleading, they do great work) has a very nice thread. All I will add is that in the future, teams should probably not run backwards forty yards instead of scoring a touchdown. And fans should probably not tear down the goal posts until all official reviews are complete. Just a suggestion.
NCAA BASKETBALL
LA was the center of the basketball world over the weekend, featuring two games between top-ten teams in women’s hoops:
Snoop Dogg. Michael B. Jordan. Jason Sudeikis. The stars were out for JuJu Watkins and (3) USC as they hosted (6) Notre Dame. But the true star of the night was Fighting Irish guard Hannah Hidalgo. The sophomore dropped a game-high 24 points and swiped five steals, leading Notre Dame to a dominant 74-61 road victory over the Trojans.
And on Sunday, (5) UCLA hosted the number one team in the country, the defending champion South Carolina Gamecocks. The Bruins ended South Carolina’s 43-game win streak with dominance in all aspects of the game. After leading 43-22 at halftime, UCLA finished with an impressive 77-62 victory.
And on the men’s side, we got our first taste of Feast Week:
On Friday, (11) Tennessee took down (13) Baylor in the Bahamas. Meanwhile, (12) Duke dominated (17) Arizona in Tuscon, beating the Wildcats 69-55.
Other teams that impressed the country with strong performances this weekend… Nebraska upset in-state rival (14) Creighton. Drake added another power conference win and remained undefeated, taking down Vanderbilt. And Wisconsin won the Greenbrier Tip-Off, registering wins over UCF and Pitt.
NHL and NBA
It appears we’ve reached our word limit… check back tomorrow morning for the latest updates in the NBA and NHL!
NOTEWORTHY NEWS
The MLB offseason has its first big trade: the Cincinnati Reds have sent second baseman Jonathan India and outfield prospect Joey Wiemer to the Kansas City Royals for starting pitcher Brady Singer. Both teams get help by trading from areas of strength- Cincy had too many middle infielders and not enough healthy pitching, while KC needed offensive help and could spare one of the arms from their rotation.
2024 has been pretty spectacular for Italian tennis, and the season ended with an exclamation point. A few days after the Italian women’s team won the Billie Jean King Cup, number one player in the world Jannik Sinner led the Italian men to a second-straight Davis Cup title.
And in other tennis news, Novak Djokovic has hired recently retired rival Andy Murray as his new coach. Can’t say anyone saw that one coming.
George Russell won the Las Vegas Grand Prix over the weekend, but it was Max Verstappen won claimed his fourth consecutive F1 championship. You may not know what F1 is, but no one can deny four titles in a row is pretty impressive.
Five days after he was fired by the Boston Bruins, Jim Montgomery has a new job: head coach of the St. Louis Blues. "A coach that I believe is a difference-maker became available, and we reacted to it,” said Blues general manager Doug Armstrong, "We have a top-level NHL coach, and now it's time for all of us to do our jobs and support him."
And now it’s time for a new segment: welcome to The QB Corner! Today we’ve got updates on two quarterbacks… New York Giants have released Daniel Jones, and Raiders starter Gardner Minshew is out for the season with a broken collarbone. I don’t foresee QB Corner coming back in future issues of the Remix.
