WC Draw; End of an Era

Good Morning! Today is Monday, December 8. Here’s what happened over the weekend in the world of sports.

NFL

The Chiefs will most likely miss the NFL playoffs. Yes, you read that correctly. The offense was completely shut down during a 20-10 loss last night to the Texans, and at 6-7 Kansas City is way on the outside of the playoff race. Travis Kelce struggled, Patrick Mahomes couldn’t come up with any magic, and another close loss may have closed the book on the Chiefs 2025 season. That’s the biggest story in the NFL this weekend, but there were a few other notable scores, too:

  • Green Bay picked off Caleb Williams in the endzone with less than a minute left, taking control of the NFC North with a 28-21 victory over the Bears.

  • On no Indy… Daniel Jones got hurt and Jacksonville rolled the Colts 36-19. The AFC South race has completely turned on its head.

  • Tyler Shough and the New Orleans Saints stunned the Bucs 24-20. Tampa Bay has dropped into a tie with Carolina for the NFC South division lead.

  • Pittsburgh won a battle against Baltimore 27-22, a massive result in the uber-close AFC North. Superman Josh Allen and the Bills beat the Bengals, too.

  • Finally, a shoutout to Shedeur Sanders. The rookie QB sparkled despite a 31-29 loss to the Titans. Sanders threw for 364 yards and three touchdowns.

NCAA FOTBALL

Where to begin after conference championship week? I think we’ll spend some more time on college football this Wednesday, but there are three big storylines that you must know:

  • First of all, congrats to the champions of the Big 10! Indiana is undefeated and heading to the Rose Bowl after taking down Ohio State 13-10. This was a hard-fought game between two physical teams. Ultimately, it was the Hoosiers who executed the big plays, while the Buckeyes missed a crucial chip shot field goal.

  • The other notable conference championship results were Georgia crushing Bama in the SEC, Texas Tech beating up on BYU in the Big 12, and Duke upsetting Virginia to win the ACC.

  • All of that leads us to the CFP bracket… somehow, after neither team played this weekend, Miami jumped over Notre Dame for the 10 seed. I believe Miami earned that spot, but does this process make any sense? No, not really. Notre Dame was so upset that they withdrew themselves from consideration from any other bowl game. At the end of the day, the top of the bracket is clear-cut and makes sense, while the bottom is… something new and interesting. That’s the convoluted landscape of college sports in 2025 for you! Here’s the bracket:

NBA

It was sort of a whirlwind, milestone weekend in the NBA. Let’s get to some highlights–

SOCCER

The World Cup draw was on Friday in Washington D.C. It was an inexplicably long ceremony with lots of unusual and unnecessary moments. But when it was all done, the result was the order of teams for this summer’s World Cup. The US was drawn with Paraguay, Australia, and the winner of one of the few remaining European playoffs (most likely this will be Turkey). You can check out the full groups here, or try to understand this slightly complicated schedule graphic below:

NEWSWORTHY

Congratulations to Jeff Kent, the newest member of the Baseball Hall of Fame! Best known for his time with the Giants, the 2000 NL MVP holds the record for most career home runs by a second baseman. Kent was the only player elected by the Contemporary Baseball Era Committee in a 16-person vote yesterday– Barry Bonds and Roger Clemens were among the others who did not receive the required 12 votes.

And congratulations to Lionel Messi and Inter Miami, champions of the MLS! They took down Vancouver 3-1 in the final.

After a long, long search, Penn State found their next head football coach. Iowa State’s Matt Campbell will head to Happy Valley and take over the Nittany Lions.

The Lions beat the Cowboys on Thursday night, but they suffered a huge loss. All-pro safety Brian Branch tore his Achilles and will miss the rest of the season.

(1) Purdue is probably not going to be ranked number one when the new rankings come out today. That’s because the Boilermakers suffered the worst nonconference home loss by a number one team in AP poll history, falling 81-58 to Iowa State.

The Password’ Jhostynxon Garcia has been traded by the Boston Red Sox to the Pittsburgh Pirates for backend starter Johan Oviedo. Interesting to see the Pirates make moves that might actually help their team get more competitive.

THIS WEEK’S BIG GAMES (all times Eastern)

MONDAY:

  • Eagles @ Chargers, 8:15 PM on ESPN

"We know them, but they know us. The most important [thing] is the evolution, and keep improving, in all the areas, for us, like a team. To be sure that in our [play] I think we will be stronger than today… Always when you walk in the door, you wait and see what's going on, [see] what happened, be optimistic and really trust your qualities and our players, in our capacity to compete,” –Team USA head coach Mauricio Pochettino after the World Cup draw

That’s all for now– see you on Thursday!
