Good Morning! Here’s what happened in the world of sports on Wednesday, January 29.
NBA
Happy Thursday! Guess what happened last night in the NBA:
The New York Knicks did the impossible– shut down Nikola Jokic. With early foul trouble limiting his impact, Jokic finished with just 17 points, six rebounds, and six assists. New York beat Denver 122-112.
I’m not entirely sure how Devin Booker made this play happen. Unfortunately for the Booker and the Suns, the effort on that possession wasn’t enough to win the game. Anthony Edwards and Kevin Durant each scored 33 points, but the Minnesota Timberwolves got the win 121-113.
At the end of the first quarter, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander had 21 points. The Golden State Warriors had 20. Although SGA continued to dominate, finishing this one with 52, the Warriors rallied for an impressive 116-109 victory over Oklahoma City. This dunk was quite the exclamation point:
What a POSTER GARY PAYTON II.

NHL
Five games, five sentences. Away we go:
The Minnesota Wild beat the Toronto Maple Leafs 3-1.
Matthew Tkachuck had a goal and two assists, leading the Florida Panthers to a 3-0 victory over the LA Kings.
Jake Allen had a shutout and both Jack and Luke Hughes scored for the New Jersey Devils, who beat the Philadelphia Flyers 5-0.
The third Hughes brother, Quinn, had two assists in a Vancouver Canucks 3-1 win over the Nashville Predators.
And finally, Sidney Crosby scored the game-winner in overtime as the Pittsburgh Penguins won a competitive game 3-2 in Utah.

COLLEGE BASKETBALL
Back to the hoops!
Maryland upset (17) Wisconsin 76-68. It’s the fourth-straight win for the Terrapins, who have dropped just one home game all season.
(4) Alabama won a tight one 88-84 over (14) Mississippi State. Josh Hubbard scored a game-high 38 points in the losing effort, while Chris Youngblood knocked down seven threes and led the Crimson Tide with 23 points.
(23) Ole Miss held on for a 72-69 win over Texas. The Longhorns had a shot to tie the game at the buzzer, but just missed.
NOTEWORTHY NEWS
Ha-Seong Kim has agreed to a two-year deal with the Tampa Bay Rays. An underrated infielder, Kim is recovering from offseason shoulder surgery and will join the club sometime after the season begins. Still, the former Padre will be a welcome addition to the Tampa lineup.
After eight weeks of games, the Champions League round robin stage is over. 12 teams have been eliminated, 16 teams have advanced to round one of the knockout stage, an eight teams have advanced to round two. Again, it’s a very confusing format but the best teams in Europe are playing very entertaining football. You can see the remaining bracket in its entirety here.
Scottie Scheffler will make his 2025 PGA debut today at Pebble Beach. The world number one’s season was delayed after a freak accident this winter sliced open his hand. Apparently you shouldn’t use a wine glass to shape the dough while making homemade ravioli. “I was like gosh, that’s so stupid,” said Scheffler.
