Venus and Hill turn back the clock
Good Morning! Here’s what happened in the world of sports on Tuesday, July 22.
MLB
Not a lot of notables from yesterday, but we’ll make up for the small quantity with some top-of-the-line quality:
Christopher Sanchez may have been the biggest all-star snub. The Phillies starter has been electric this season, and he continued his impressive run last night. Sanchez threw the third complete game of his career, allowing just four hits and striking out 12 Red Sox in a 4-1 Phillies victory.
Big Dumper alert! Cal Raleigh hit his 39th home run of the year… but this one was extra special. The solo shot was the only run scored in the game, handing the Mariners a 1-0 win and ending Milwaukee’s 11-game win streak.
Remember all the hubbub in Boston about whether Rafael Devers would play first base? Well, he made his first-career start at the position last night for San Francisco. Devers drove in a run and the Giants snapped a six-game losing streak, beating the Braves 9-0.
Rich Hill made his Major League debut for the Chicago Cubs in 2005. Last night, the 45-year-old tied Edwin Jackson and appeared in a game for his record-tying 14th team! His Royals teammates Bobby Witt Jr. and Jac Caglianone were five and two when Hill began his career! And against all those odds, the veteran delivered. Although Kansas City lost 6-0 to the Cubs, Hill gave up just one run over five effective innings.

TENNIS
As if there wasn’t enough she’d already accomplished through a storied career, Venus Williams made her return to professional tennis last night and made history once more. A year and a half after she last competed at the highest level, Venus became the second-oldest woman to win a match on tour. The 45-year-old defeated Peyton Stearns 6-3, 6-4 at the DC Open. The stat of the day? Venus had won four Grand Slams before the 22-year-old Stearns was even born!
NOTEWORTHY NEWS
Congratulations to Tyrann Mathieu! The veteran defensive back announced his retirement from the NFL yesterday after 12 incredible seasons. The Honey Badger was a Heisman finalist at LSU, a three-time first-team All-Pro in the NFL, and a Super Bowl champion with the Chiefs.
