US Soccer loses badly; Remix All-Star picks
Good Morning! Here’s what happened in the world of sports on Tuesday, June 10.
MLB
The Padres beat the Dodgers by a lot and the Rangers scored 16 runs against the Twins, but we’re focusing on shutouts and walk-offs this morning:
Reds pitcher Andrew Abbott is at the top of the league alphabetically. He’s also been one of the top starters this season– Abbott threw his first career shutout yesterday and dropped his season ERA to 1.87. Cincinnati beat Cleveland 1-0.
Trailing 4-2 in the eighth inning, the New York Mets rallied to tie things up and send their game against Washington into extras. Jeff McNeil’s walk-off single a few innings later scored Luisangel Acuna, securing a 5-4 victory.
Travis d’Arnaud crushed a solo homer in the 8th to tie the Angels 1-1 with the Athletics. That set the stage for first baseman Nolan Schanuel, who knocked his first career walk-off hit to score the winning run for LA.
WNBA
With Caitlin Clark still injured, the Indiana Fever are struggling. They fell to Atlanta 77-58 last night. In other WNBA action, the defending champion Liberty continued their undefeated season, taking down the Chicago Sky 85-66.
SOCCER
In their last warmup game before the upcoming Gold Cup, the US men’s team got destroyed 4-0 by Switzerland. Not much to say, it was simply a poor performance.
NOTEWORTHY NEWS
Aaron Rodgers is married! Not sure what to tell you, it’s a slow sports news day.
MLB ALL-STAR PICKS
We’ve got about one month until the 2025 Midsummer Classic, so what better time to make our initial all-star game selections! For each league, I’ll pick a starting lineup and one backup at each position, plus two bonus hitters. I’ll also pick seven starting pitchers and three relievers. Remember, each team is required to have one representative– even the Colorado Rockies. Here we go!
AMERICAN LEAGUE
Catcher: Cal Raleigh, Dillon Dingler
First Base: Spencer Torkelson, Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Tyler Soderstrom
Second Base: Gleyber Torres, Brandon Lowe
Third Base: Jose Ramirez, Junior Caminero
Shortstop: Bobby Witt Jr, Jeremy Pena, Jacob Wilson
Outfield: Aaron Judge, Taylor Ward, Steven Kwan, Julio Rodriguez, Byron Buxton, Riley Greene
DH: Rafael Devers, Ryan O’Hearn
Starting Pitchers: Tarik Skubal, Max Fried, Kris Bubic, Garrett Crochet, Shane Smith, Hunter Brown, Jacob DeGrom/Nathan Eovaldi (pick your favorite Ranger)
Relievers: Andres Munoz, Josh Hader, Carlos Estevez
There’s always a few deserving pitchers that get left off the team and named as replacements later, so I feel pretty confident in this group. On the hitting side, Paul Goldschmidt, Jonathan Aranda, Alex Bregman, George Springer, and Cody Bellinger were close calls. I also have no idea who the second catcher should be after Big Dumper, so I rewarded a team with the best record and voted in a young guy who’s been playing every day.

NATIONAL LEAGUE
Catcher: Will Smith, Ivan Herrera
First Base: Freddie Freeman, Pete Alonso
Second Base: Brendan Donovan, Ketel Marte
Third Base: Manny Machado, Eugenio Suarez
Shortstop: Francisco Lindor, Elly De La Cruz, Mookie Betts
Outfield: Pete Crow-Armstrong, Corbin Carroll, James Wood, Kyle Tucker, Kyle Stowers, Christian Yelich, Fernando Tatis Jr.
DH: Shohei Ohtani, Kyle Schwarber
Starting Pitchers: Paul Skenes, MacKenzie Gore, Zack Wheeler, Kodai Senga, Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Chris Sale, Robbie Ray/Logan Webb (pick your favorite Giant)
Relievers: Jake Bird, Kyle Finnegan, Robert Suarez
Juan Soto will be an all-star, but he hasn’t done quite enough yet to crack this group yet, especially with Stowers and Yelich as my only representatives from their teams. Trea Turner, Austin Riley, Oneil Cruz and Matt Chapman were in contention and could make their way onto the all-star squad, too. Hunter Greene would be my first pitcher replacement. And shoutout to Ivan Herrera! The Cardinals DH/catcher is hitting the cover off the ball and more people should be talking about it.
