Upsets, trades, and expansion
Good Morning! Here’s what happened in the world of sports on Monday, June 30.
MLB
We begin, as usual over the summer, with scores from Major League Baseball:
It was a home run party in Seattle– Big Dumper hit his league-leading 33rd of the season and Randy Arozarena swatted two homers, including the 100th of his career. The Mariners beat the Royals 6-2.
Zack Wheeler dominated the Padres with eight shutout innings and 10 strikeouts. The Phillies beat San Diego 4-0.
We had a wacky one in Texas. The Rangers and Orioles were tied 3-3 going into extra innings. After Baltimore scored three runs in the top of the 10th, Adolis Garcia hit a massive three-run homer to keep Texas alive. But the O’s kept on the pressure– Gunnar Henderson ended up with four RBIs in extra innings and Baltimore won 10-6 in 11.
And then there was this, from Boston’s 13-6 win over Cincinnati:
Wilyer Abreu did something that hasn't been done since 1958 🤯

TENNIS
Day one of Wimbledon is in the books, and the drama at the All-England Club has already kicked into high gear… not to mention the record-setting heat wave!
Five of the men’s top 25 seeds have already been eliminated, including (8) Holger Rune and (9) Daniil Medvedev. That number could grow depending on how (5) Taylor Fritz fares tomorrow. The top-ranked American roared back from two sets to none and was about to begin a deciding fifth set against the Frenchmen Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard before the Wimbledon curfew forced the match to stop play. Perricard set the record for fastest serve ever recorded at Wimbledon (153 MPH!) earlier in the match.
Defending champion Carlos Alcaraz pulled off a daring escape against the veteran Fabio Fognini, surviving an upset in five thrilling sets. In what was likely his last-ever Wimbledon match, Fognini provided one last magical performance on the big stage. Carlos remains the favorite to win it all.
A lot less first-day upsets on the women’s side, although former finalist Ons Jabeur was forced to withdraw due to injury. The big story is the early success of the Brits at home. Emma Raducanu and Katie Boulter led the way with first-round victories. Boulter won a great three-set match against (9) Paula Badosa.
SOCCER
Remember the Club World Cup? The tournament with top teams from around the world no one is paying much attention towards? Well we’ve finally got a big story. Al Hilal, from Saudi Arabia, stunned Manchester City 4-3 in the quarterfinals. No matter how important the competition, that is a result worth mentioning.
NOTEWORTHY NEWS
NBA free agency is overwhelming… here are the notable players who signed with new teams:
We start with the Center Carousel… Luke Kornet left Boston and signed with the Spurs. Luka Garza joined Boston from Minnesota. Former Hawk Clint Capela agreed to a deal with the Rockets. Brook Lopez is leaving Milwaukee for the Clippers. And longtime Golden State vet Kevon Looney will now be a member of the Pelicans. Got all that?
Moving on to guards, D’Angelo Russell was signed by the Dallas Mavericks, and the Kings picked up Dennis Schroder.
Finally, the forwards. Former Wake Forest Demon Deacon Jake LaRavia signed a two-year deal with the Lakers. Dorian Finney-Smith is leaving the purple and gold to join the new Western Conference powerhouse known as the Houston Rockets. Denver reunited with former Nugget Bruce Brown. And in maybe the best deal of free agency so far, the Hawks signed Minnesota’s Nickeil Alexander-Walker.
The biggest move of the day, however, came in the form of a trade. Denver has dealt Michael Porter Jr. and a 2032 first round pick to the Brooklyn Nets for Cam Johnson. It’s a sort of challenge deal, as the two teams exchange a pair of wings who are top of the league in three-point percentage. The better defender of the two, Johnson has long been viewed as an ideal piece on a championship team. Porter and his expensive contract have been mentioned in trade talks for the last season and a half. A fascinating deal for both sides.
We’ve also got an NFL trade– the Steelers are sending safety Minkah Fitzpatrick and a fifth round pick to the Miami Dolphins for corner Jalen Ramsey, tight end Jonnu Smith, and a seventh round pick. Pittsburgh has officially gone all-in on this season, adding another expensive veteran to their team in the form of Ramsey, who had asked out of Miami earlier this offseason. An odd deal, we’ll see how it works out.
A couple of big pieces were moved on the eve of NHL free agency– Aaron Ekblad and Brad Marchand have re-upped with the Stanley Cup champion Florida Panthers. They’ll return practically their entire roster from this year’s team. And the biggest name on the open market will not actually be available. The Vegas Golden Knights have swung a sign-and-trade with the Toronto Maple Leafs for star forward Mitch Marner. Marner will sign an eight-year deal with his new team, and the Knights will try out the lots of stars but not a lot of depth strategy.
Two huge announcements from the WNBA. First, this year’s all-star starters were announced. Yes, Caitlin Clark had the most votes and will be a captain. Paige Bueckers was the only rookie elected to the starting five. Second, the locations of the next three expansion cities were announced: Detroit, Philadelphia, and Cleveland will be members of the W by the end of the decade. The WNBA will grow to 18 teams, the largest it’s been in league history.
Two-time Stanley Cup champion Alex Pietrangelo announced he’s stepping away from hockey. While not an official retirement announcement, the veteran defenseman said, “[the likelihood] is low that my body will recover to the standard required to play, but I know this is the right decision for me and my family." Wishing nothing but the best to the Golden Knights leader and the captain who brought a Cup to St. Louis.
Last but not least, EA Sports announced plans to bring back their college basketball video game. The game won’t be out until at least 2028, but excitement is already building…
