Underdog Wednesday, featuring Fonseca and the Tigers
Good Morning! Here’s what happened in the world of sports on Tuesday, January 14.
NBA
We begin this Wednesday morning with a bit of pro basketball:
Congrats to Giannis Antetokounmpo on his 50th career triple-double! Giannis and the Bucks beat Sacramento 130-115.
Cleveland lost their 12-game win streak on Sunday against the Pacers, but they were able to enact swift revenge. The Cavs beat Indiana last night 127-117.
And now, a shoutout to three players who are having seasons unlike anything we’ve seen in a very long time:
Trae Young: 12.1 assists/game (most since John Stockton 12.3 in ‘94-95)
Victor Wembanyama: 3.91 blocks/game (most since Alonzo Mourning 3.91 in ‘98-99)
Dyson Daniels: 3.12 steals/game (most since John Stockton 3.21 in ‘88-89)
NHL
Sure, there were a lot of games yesterday in the National Hockey League. But we’re going to focus on just one of them:
Colorado’s Cale Makar became the first defenseman in the league this year to reach 50 points, registering an assist early in the first period.
The New York Rangers took a 2-1 lead in the second period last night on a goal by Adam Edstrom. With a two-game win streak, the tide is slowly turning for New York after a rough start to the season.
But with just over a minute remaining in the third period, Avalanche forward Artturi Lehkonen tied the game. That set up Devon Toews to slot home the game-winner in overtime. Another comeback victory for Colorado, and another tough break for the Rangers.
NO QUIT IN THE AVALANCHE!! 🙌

COLLEGE BASKETBALL
A fun night in college hoops!
Higher rankings held strong in two of the marquee SEC matchups: (1) Auburn beat (15) Mississippi State, and (8) Kentucky beat (11) Texas A&M. But (21) Ole Miss pulled off the road upset, taking down (4) Alabama in Tuscaloosa 74-64.
The big upset of the night, however, was in Gainesville. Mizzou went on the road and held on for an 83-82 win against (5) Florida. There are no easy games this season in the Southeastern Conference.
Over in the Big 10, Indiana might be wishing it was still football season… file that under sentences you never thought anyone would write. The Hoosiers trailed (19) Illinois 60-32 at halftime. The final score was 94-69. That’s #notgood
We’ll end with this highlight-reel dunk from Wisconsin’s John Tonje. The Badgers squeaked out a 70-68 win against Ohio State:

TENNIS
In addition to Tien, the Remix is keeping an eye on Brazilian youngster Joao Fonseca. He’s going to make a run at a big event at some point this year, watch out.
Well it didn’t take long. The 18-year old Fonseca was absolutely dominant yesterday in a straight-sets win over (9) Andrey Rublev, pulling off the biggest result of the tournament so far. If the time zones allow, make sure you tune in for his next match. Elsewhere in Melbourne…
After losing the first set 6-1 in less than 30 minutes, Naomi Osaka won a great match against (20) Karolina Muchova. She’s into the third round and faces yet another tough test: 2020 gold medal winner Belinda Bencic.
And maybe Coco Gauff is playing right now? There was a lengthy rain delay, so it’s possible. Turn on your TV, only one way to find out!
