Good Morning! Here’s what happened in the world of sports on Thursday, July 31.
MLB TRADE DEADLINE
Oh boy– the plan coming into today was only to highlight the top few names that were moved. But after what felt like a billion deals on deadline day, there were simply too many contributors changing teams to cut down on this recap. Practically every contender acquired a player that will make a difference down the stretch. So without further ado, here’s your official Remix 2025 MLB Trade Deadline Review (here’s a handy link to view a summary of all the July deals):
THE BIG SWINGS
“Something crazy, who knows what it’ll be” is what I predicted for the Padres a few days ago. General Manager AJ Preller delivered on that prediction and more. First, San Diego sent a package highlighted by Leo De Vries– a top-ten prospect in all of baseball– for Mason Miller and JP Sears of the Athletics. Miller is one of the best closers in baseball, but that’s a heavy price to pay. After a series of smaller moves, Preller then went out and got Ramon Laureano and Ryan O’Hearn from the Orioles to boost the Padres lineup. No team took more risks or went more all-in on this season than San Diego. We’ll see if the boldness pays off.
Houston, we have a reunion! The Astros shocked the sport, taking on the majority of Carlos Correa’s expensive contract from the Twins and bringing the former all-star back to the team where his career started. That move, plus outfielder Jesus Sanchez from Miami, will do a lot to improve an injured Astros lineup.
And how about the Toronto Blue Jays, leaders of the AL East? The team up north took a gamble on recovering Guardians ace Shane Bieber, then acquired Louie Varland and Ty France from Minnesota to shore up their depth.
PITCHING MAKEOVERS
The Yankees heard about the Mets and built a super bullpen of their own, acquiring Camilo Doval from the Giants, David Bednar from the Pirates, and Jake Bird from the Rockies. A very impressive haul for New York, who also picked up utility man Jose Caballero from the Rays.
Detroit continued a week of tinkering with moves for their pitching staff, picking up closer Kyle Finnegan from Washington and veteran starter Charlie Morton from Baltimore.
Tampa Bay traded some pieces away but also made two key additions. The Rays traded for reliever Griffin Jax from the Twins, giving up talented but struggling starter Taj Bradley. They replaced him with White Sox starter Adrian Houser.
And last but not least, the Texas Rangers swooped in for Diamondbacks starter Merrill Kelly. As if they’re rotation wasn’t strong enough already!
NL EAST ARMS RACE
The Philadelphia Phillies made a good move for center fielder Harrison Bader. Just as they did yesterday with the bullpen arms, the Mets tried to one-up their rival, dealing for Orioles center fielder Cedric Mullins. This will be a fun rivalry to watch down the stretch.
THE SMALLER DEALS
The Red Sox swapped James Tibbs, the prospect that headlined the Rafael Devers deal, with the Dodgers for starter Dustin May. That’s one to remember down the line. Tibbs will replace James Outman for LA, as they sent the former top prospect to Minnesota for some relief help.
Not much ado in the NL Central– the Brewers added reliever Shelby Miller from Arizona, while the Cubs grabbed utility man Willi Castro from Minnesota and Taylor Rogers from the Pirates. Cincinnati, meanwhile, added yet another infielder in Miguel Andujar from the Athletics.
And then there’s two odd teams stuck in the middle. Kansas City keeps going for it, making a deal for Giants outfielder Mike Yastrzemski. We’ll see if he moves the needle for a team hovering around .500. And the befuddling Angels, with a record of 53-56, traded for struggling Yankees infielder Oswald Peraza. Make that one make sense!
POOR MINNESOTA…
I hope you didn’t buy a jersey of your favorite Twin this year– Minnesota dealt away most of their roster over the past week. Jayson Stark summarizes it nicely:
The Twins have made 9 trades this week!
Out the door went 7 pitchers, plus Correa, Bader, France and Castro
I don't ever recall a deadline selloff quite that massive

NFL
The future is here! Yesterday’s annual Hall of Fame game kicked off the preseason. I couldn’t tell you the score, but I can show you this video of some revolutionary technology:
Introducing the new virtual measurement system for first downs, which allows the NFL to accurately and efficiently measure the distance between the spotted ball and the line to gain.

MLB
Right, they played three games yesterday! With all the Twitter refreshing and chaos on the phone lines an, we almost forgot:
The Yankees beat the Rays 7-4. Giancarlo Stanton hit a homer run, his eighth of the season.
Cal Raleigh swatted his 42nd homer of the year and the Mariners cruised to a 6-0 win over the Rangers. Aaron Judge set the AL home run record with 62. Raleigh is on pace to match him…
We may have seen the craziest game of the year last night in Cincinnati. Tied 3-3, Atlanta scored eight runs in the eighth inning. Trailing 11-3 in the bottom of the inning, the Reds matched them! Cincinnati’s first eight batters of the ninning reached base and the home team tied things up 11-11! Atlanta eventually won 12-11 in ten innings– but look at that box score!
An 8-run 8th for the Braves
An 8-run 8th for the RedsThis is some wild stuff 😮

NOTEWORTHY NEWS
The New York Knicks have agreed to a four year, $150 million contract extension with Mikal Bridges. It looks like a great deal for both sides, as New York locks up their talented wing defender slightly below the max, while Bridges cements himself as a core member of the Knicks moving forward.
Washington, however, is not having success in the contract department. The Commanders have been unable to extend star wide out Terry McLaurin. The latest update– McLaurin has requested a trade. We’ll see how this one plays out…
THIS WEEKEND’S BIG GAMES (all times Eastern)
MLB SPEEDWAY CLASSIC: It’s baseball… at a race track! The Reds take on the Braves at Bristol Motor Speedway, with first pitch at 7:15 PM Saturday on Fox
That was fun.
