Thunderstruck

Good Morning! Here’s what happened in the world of sports on Thursday, January 16.

NBA

We’ve got a new team atop the standings in the NBA! Or at least tied for the lead– the Oklahoma City Thunder absolutely dominated the Cleveland Cavaliers last night, winning by a score of 134-114. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander had 40 points and eight assists in just three quarters, as the bench guys got to play out the fourth in this matchup of top teams. SGA and OKC: they’re the real deal.

COLLEGE BASKETBALL

Yesterday was upset day in the world of college hoops! Check out these two scores:

  • With the game tied at 74, Northwestern had just 0.7 seconds left in overtime against Maryland. Somehow the Wildcats got an open look… buzzer, swish, game.

  • Temple got their first win over a top 25 team in two years, taking down (18) Memphis 88-81. Jamal Mashburn Jr. led the way for the Owls with 21 points.

  • Danny Wolf tied the game for (20) Michigan with just seven seconds left in overtime against unranked Minnesota. And then, the play of the night. You’re gonna want to see this one:

NHL

Time for the ice:

  • Nathan MacKinnon went head-to-head with Connor McDavid, and the matchup did not disappoint. MacKinnon scored two goals as the Avalanche jumped out to a 3-0 lead. But the Oilers roared back, as McDavid scored a goal and set up the game-winner with a nice assist. Edmonton won this one 4-3.

  • Filip Forsberg scored his 300th career goal and the Nashville Predators beat the Chicago Blackhawks 3-2 in a shootout.

  • Watch out world: the Columbus Blue Jackets have won their sixth game in a row. Last night was a 4-1 victory over San Jose.

  • And last but certainly not least, thank you to the social media person at SportsCenter. You’ve said it all:

TENNIS

Thank you to everyone who sent me a message yesterday morning about Learner Tien– that was pretty awesome to wake up to the news that the American teenager had upset (5) Daniil Medvedev in five sets. The magic of the Australian Open continues through the weekend– here are the other top stories from yesterday:

  • Joao Fonseca’s deep run may have to wait. The young Brazilian lost in five sets to wily veteran Lorenzo Sonego.

  • Fan-favorite Francis Tiafoe is out early, too. The American was upset by Fabian Marozsan.

  • American Danielle Collins didn’t make too many friends with her celebration against Australian Destanee Aiava last night… but she also didn’t seem to care very much about the opinion of the locals:

NOTEWORTHY NEWS

Legendary baseball hall of famer Bob Uecker passed away yesterday at 90 years old. A lifetime .200 hitter, Uecker won the World Series as a member of the 1964 St. Louis Cardinals. But he is best known as the larger-than-life voice of the Milwaukee Brewers, where he called games for over 50 years. Uecker’s passion for the game and ability to make anyone laugh earned him the nickname “Mr. Baseball”, a moniker which he wore proudly. In addition to his work in Milwaukee, Uecker made a quite an impact in the world of entertainment. Whether it was a Miller Lite commercial, late-night television, or his beloved role as Harry Doyle in the movie Major League, no one held the attention of an audience quite like Uecker… and that’s just a few of his many wonderful appearances. Safe to say, Bob Uecker will be missed by all. You can read more about him here.
