Thunder strikes in the NBA Cup
Good Morning! Here’s what happened in the world of sports on Tuesday, December 10.
NBA
Two of the four NBA Cup quarterfinals took place last night. While not quite as intense playoff atmosphere, this was some supremely high-level pro basketball:
Giannis Antetokounmpo scored 37, but it was Dame Time last night in Milwaukee. The Bucks point guard was clutch down the stretch, leading the home team to a 114-109 victory over the Orlando Magic. It was one of those finishing sequences where it’s much better for me to show you how Damian Lillard won the game then tell you:
Dame does it AGAIN down the stretch:
⌚️ Stepback 3 to tie it at 106
⌚️ Go-ahead dunk to put @Bucks up 1Finishes with 28 PTS and 9 AST to help Milwaukee advance to the #EmiratesNBACup Semis! 🏆

And in the other quarterfinal, the Thunder took another step towards establishing themselves as the best team in the NBA. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander had 39 points and Oklahoma City beat the Dallas Mavericks 118-104. OKC will face the winner of Golden State vs Houston in the semifinals.
NCAA BASKETBALL
Two intriguing results from college hoops last night:
Illinois hosted (20) Wisconsin and upset the Badgers 86-80. Watch out for Illini freshman sensation Kasparas Jakucionis this season. That dude is the real deal.
And at a neutral site game in New York, (14) Michigan dropped a close one to Arkansas 89-87. The Razorbacks should probably be ranked.
NHL
Let’s check in on the ice, shall we?
Leon Draisaitl is the first player to 20 goals on the year, notching his league-leading tally as part of a 2-1 Edmonton Oilers victory over the Tampa Bay Lightning.
Winnipeg just keeps on Winning..ipeg. The Jets crushed the Boston Bruins 8-1, with seven different players scoring goals for the winning team.
NOTEWORTHY NEWS
All-star Max Fried has signed an eight-year free agent contract with the New York Yankees. The former Braves lefty will form quite a duo atop the rotation with Yankee ace Gerrit Cole– not a bad consolation prize after New York lost out on Juan Soto.
The number one basketball recruit in the class of 2025 has committed to BYU. AJ Dybantsa, a 6’9” wing from Utah, announced his decision yesterday. It’s rumored that he’ll be earn $7 million in NIL money his freshman season.
Two other notable moves from Major League Baseball yesterday– first, the MLB Draft lottery was won by the Washington Nationals. You can view the full order of next July’s draft here. And second, the Guardians are wheeling and dealing, sending second baseman Andres Gimenez to the Toronto Blue Jays for a collection of players, before flipping the headliner in that deal (Spencer Horowitz) to the Pittsburgh Pirates. Could some larger move be on the horizon for Cleveland?
Wait! At the buzzer! During the Remix writing process, news has broken that the Miami Marlins have agreed to trade power-hitting third baseman Jake Burger to the Texas Rangers. This offseason has been super entertaining so far– who knows what moves we’ll wake up to?
