The worst baseball team ever?
Good Morning! Here’s what happened in the world of sports on Thursday, May 9.
NHL
"Game 1 wasn't good enough. We knew that. It was in our headspace for the last couple of days. It's not a good feeling when you go home after Game 1 and you weren't happy with your effort," said Washington Capitals forward Tom Wilson, "As a group, we have the ability to look at each other and demand more. To know that the guy next to you is going to show up and give it everything is just a really cool thing." Wilson said the right things but he also earned the first star of the night in game two, scoring a goal, recording an assist, and laying his body on the line to block multiple shots in game two. The Capitals evened their series against the Carolina Hurricanes with a 3-1 victory.
Our game of the night was in Vegas, where the Edmonton Oilers took on the Golden Knights. This one was as wild as the city that hosted, with fantastic saves and goal-scoring heroics on both sides. The game was tied 4-4 heading into overtime, where finally, superstars Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl got free on a 2-on-1 break…
It doesn’t seem right that a team is trailing after that awesome game, but the Oilers will head back to Edmonton with a commanding 2-0 series lead.
NBA
Only one game last night in the National Basketball Association, and it went sort of as we all expected. The Steph Curry-less Warriors put up a good fight, but they were no match for a Timberwolves team eager to put their game one performance in the past. Julius Randle had 24 points and 11 assists, Anthony Edwards scored 20 points and brought down nine rebounds, and Minnesota won game two 117-93. One good sign for Golden State– Jonathan Kuminga scored 18 points on 8-11 shooting in an increased role off the bench. With Kuminga providing a scoring punch, the Warriors have a fighter’s chance to keep this series close as they wait for Curry to return.
Two extraneous note– Anthony Edwards left this game for a few minutes with an ankle injury, but he returned. Something to monitor. And Draymond Green picked up another technical foul, moving him just two away from an automatic single-game suspension. Draymond had a lot to say on the matter after the game.
MLB
Let’s go to the diamond, shall we?
Two contests needed extra innings to determine a winner– the Phillies beat the Rays 7-6 in 10 innings, while the Braves beat Cincinnati 5-4 in 11 innings thanks to a Drake Baldwin walk-off single.
The Detroit Tigers, one of the best teams in baseball so far this year, crushed the Colorado Rockies 10-2 yesterday. Then in game two of the doubleheader, the worst team in the league, the Colorado Rockies, got smoked 11-1 by the Detroit Tigers. “We’re playing a bad brand of baseball, all around -- pitching, fielding, hitting. It’s bad,” explained Rockies starter Kyle Freeland.
I feel as if I have done a bad job highlighting something amazing this season, so let’s take this moment to correct that: Aaron Judge is hitting about as well as anyone in the history of baseball. Judge is leading the league in basically every stat, including average (.400), home runs (12), and OPS (1.241). So in case you forgot, here’s your reminder that Aaron Judge is really, really, good at hitting a baseball, and we need to recognize that.
NOTEWORTHY NEWS
The Pittsburgh Pirates have fired manager Derek Shelton. He finishes his Pirates career with a record of 306-440 with zero playoff appearances. Apparently the final straw was being swept this week by the St. Louis Cardinals.
Boston lost first baseman Tristan Casas for the season to a gruesome knee injury this week, so it was natural that the Red Sox front office would be looking for a possible replacement. We can rule out one player: Rafael Devers. I tried to edit this quote and select only the important parts of his statement, but Devers simply had too much to say on the matter:
“I know I’m a ballplayer, but at the same time, they can’t expect me to play every single position out there,” Devers said through team translator Daveson Perez. “In spring training, they talked to me and basically told me to put away my glove, that I wasn’t going to play any other position but DH, so right now, I just feel like it’s not an appropriate decision by them to ask me to play another position. I’m not certain what he has with me,” Devers said of general manager and former MLB reliever Craig Breslow. “He played ball, and I would like to think that he knows that changing positions like that isn’t easy. They put me in this situation, and they told me that they didn’t want to allow me to play any other position. Now, I think they should do their jobs, essentially, and hit the market and look for another player. I’m not sure why they want me to be in-between the way they have been. They’ve told me I’m a little hard-headed. And they already asked me to change once, and this time, I don’t think I can be as flexible. Here in the clubhouse, thankfully, the relationship that I have with my teammates is great. I don’t understand some of the decisions that the GM makes. Next thing you know someone in the outfield gets hurt and they want me to play in the outfield. I think I know the kind of player that I am, and that’s just where I stand.”
