The winningest coach of all-time
Good Morning! Here’s what happened in the world of sports on Wednesday, November 20.
NBA
Checking in on three teams in the Eastern Conference this morning:
Jalen Brunson and Karl-Anthony Towns became the first teammates this season to record 30-point double-doubles. With their star duo leading the way, the New York Knicks beat the Phoenix Suns 138-122.
Giannis Antetokounmpo was really close to a triple-double last night. I’m sure he’s still happy with his 41 points, nine rebounds, and eight assists. Giannis and the Bucks got the victory over the Bulls 122-106.
Last night was the first game of the season with Tyrese Maxey, Paul George, and Joel Embiid on the floor for the Philadelphia 76ers. George re-injured his knee and Philly lost 117-11 to the Memphis Grizzlies, who were without Ja Morant. The 76ers are 2-12 on the year, and things just keep getting worse.
NHL
Five games in the NHL last night, but none were particularly thrilling. So let’s take a moment to assess the standings. We’re about 20 games in, so let’s call this a first quarter check-in:
Starting in the Eastern Conference, the Carolina Hurricanes are in first place with 28 points. Washington (led by the league’s leading goal-scorer Alexander Ovechkin), Toronto, and New Jersey are right behind them. If the season ended today, Florida, Tampa Bay, Buffalo, and the New York Rangers would complete the playoff picture.
In the Western Conference, the Winnipeg Jets have a built a nice lead in first place. However, Minnesota isn’t far behind them. Dallas, Vegas, Calgary, and LA are firmly in playoff spots, while Edmonton and Vancouver round out the teams in playoff position.
Two teams to keep an eye on: Colorado and Boston. Both were expected to be Stanley Cup competitors, and both have started the year slowly. Nashville, on the other hand, has thoroughly disappointed. After making lots of big moves in the offseason, it looks like the Predators have some decisions to make about their future.
If your favorite team wasn’t listed, don’t worry. Excluding Nashville and Chicago, every team is within six points of a playoff spot! Things can change quickly in the National Hockey League... just ask the 2019 Stanley Cup champions, the St. Louis Blues!
COLLEGE BASKETBALL
Two very different results from college hoops last night. First, Jacksonville pulled off the big upset against Virginia Tech. The Dolphins went on the road and beat the Hokies 74-64. Wake Forest transfer Robert McCray had 17 points and eight assists in the victory.
And (8) Alabama took down (25) Illinois in a high-flying affair, winning by a score of 100-87. Grant Nelson led the way for the Crimson Tide with 23 points, who won despite a scoreless night from their senior leader and preseason All-American Mark Sears. Freshman Labaron Philon may be a name to learn: he dropped 16 points, nine assists, and seven rebounds.
NOTEWORTHY NEWS
Congratulations to UConn women’s basketball coach Geno Auriemma, who set the all-time record for wins last night. "No amount of championships and no amount of numbers or awards can take the place of the lives that we've impacted, that they've allowed us to impact," Auriemma said. "That, to me, is the strongest part.” Of the three coaches to reach 1,200 career wins (Tara VanDerveer and Mike Krzyzewski), only Auriemma recorded all his wins at one school.
Major League Baseball continued their slow rollout of the 2024 award winners yesterday, recognizing Tarik Skubal (AL) and Chris Sale (NL) as this year’s Cy Young recipients. Both first-time winners of the award, Skubal and Sale became the fourth duo all-time to win the pitching triple crown in the same season. While their seasons were similar, each pitcher is at a very different point in their careers. Skubal is the 28-year old ace of the Detroit Tigers, the face of a young team ascending to the top of the league. Sale is a former all-star who regained his previous form, completing an unlikely comeback for the Braves at 35.
