The last weekend without football...

Good Morning! Here’s what happened in the world of sports on Thursday, August 14.

MLB

Just a few games yesterday in the Big Leagues, but first I must issue a correction. The Angels came back to beat the Dodgers last night, securing a season sweep! It’s a massive moral victory for the Angels with ramifications for the Dodgers in the NL West. They’ve been overtaken by the Padres for first place in the division. Now, to yesterday’s action:

TENNIS

How about some love for Terrance Atmane! The 23-year-old Frenchman was ranked outside the top 150 before this week in Cincinnati. That was before he beat rising star Joao Fonseca, the four seed Taylor Fritz, and last night, seven seed Holger Rune. A career week has earned Atmane a spot in the semifinals of the Cincinnati Open and a matchup against the world number one, Jannik Sinner.

We’ve got quite a stacked draw on both the men’s and women’s side of this tournament. Opposite the Atmane/Sinner semi, the second men’s finalist will be the last man standing between Andrey Rublev, Alexander Zverev, Ben Shelton, and of course, Carlos Alcaraz. Aryna Sabalenka, Iga Swiatek, and Coco Gauff are each favored in this afternoon’s quarterfinal action, too. It’s truly the best players in the game on the biggest stage here in Cincinnati– should make for a fun weekend.

NOTEWORTHY NEWS

Wednesday, Nathaniel Lowe hit a grand slam and led the Nationals to an 8-7 win over the Royals. Yesterday, he was released by the team. Keep an eye out for wherever the powerful first baseman ends up next.

Prosecutors declined to pursue charges relating to allegations of battery by Cleveland rookie running back Quinshon Judkins, clearing the way for him to sign and join the team before the season. And talented wideout Isiah Bond, who went undrafted because of assault allegations, announced plans to sign with the Browns after charges were dropped against him, too. Let’s see if the Browns can translate this into on-field victories.

Keep your eyes open and turn on notifications– the NCAA is expected to announce their verdict on the Michigan sign-stealing investigation. Did you forget that was still a thing? It sure took them a while to figure this one out. We’ll see how the slap on the wrist ends up.
