The Jets go trick-or-treating

Good Morning! Here’s what happened in the world of sports on Thursday, October 31.

NFL

Let’s skip the first half of Thursday Night football, shall we? Outside of a 99-yard Texans touchdown drive, it was some pretty ugly football. Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers was 7/14 passing for just 32 yards, and Jets wide receiver Malachi Corley cost his team a touchdown after celebrating too early. The second half? Well, that was a different story:

  • When the Jets needed him most, Garrett Wilson showed up. The standout wide receiver caught two touchdown passes, including this one that may wind up as the catch of the year. After a miserable start to the game (and the season), Wilson and Rodgers provided the New York Jets with a lead.

  • CJ Stroud and the Houston Texans struggled to find any offensive rhythm. The offensive line struggled in pass protection and the receiving core without Nico Collins and Stefon Diggs was limited. Joe Mixon carried the ball 24 times for 106 yards a touchdown as the lone bright spot.

  • Even with all the difficulties, the difference in this game may have been field goals. Ka’imi Fairbairn missed two kicks– one that would have given Houston a 10-0 lead to end the first half, and one that would have cut the Jets lead to 14-13 late in the fourth quarter. A Davante Adams touchdown sealed the deal, and New York snapped a five-game losing streak. The Jets won 21-13.

NBA

Four NBA games took place last night. Let’s recap ‘em all:

NHL

And of course, we’ve got highlights from the world of hockey:

NOTEWORTHY NEWS

Well, the MLB offseason wasted no time getting started: the Atlanta Braves have traded outfielder Jorge Soler to the Los Angeles Angels for pitcher Griffin Canning. It’s both a money-saving deal for Atlanta and a low-risk high-reward acquisition. Meanwhile, the Angels acquire some Soler power to help improve one of the league’s worst offenses.

Just a few days after dropping 50 points, Orlando Magic star Paolo Banchero has been diagnosed with a torn oblique. Banchero will be out for a minimum of one month, but he’ll likely miss more time. The news is disappointing both for the Magic and for fans of entertaining basketball, as Banchero is one of the league’s fastest-rising stars.

After over four decades in the broadcast booth, Bob Costas announced he is retiring from play-by-play duties. A member of the Baseball Hall of Fame, Costas will continue to appear on MLB Network as a host and analyst.
