The Jets go trick-or-treating
Good Morning! Here’s what happened in the world of sports on Thursday, October 31.
NFL
Let’s skip the first half of Thursday Night football, shall we? Outside of a 99-yard Texans touchdown drive, it was some pretty ugly football. Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers was 7/14 passing for just 32 yards, and Jets wide receiver Malachi Corley cost his team a touchdown after celebrating too early. The second half? Well, that was a different story:
When the Jets needed him most, Garrett Wilson showed up. The standout wide receiver caught two touchdown passes, including this one that may wind up as the catch of the year. After a miserable start to the game (and the season), Wilson and Rodgers provided the New York Jets with a lead.
CJ Stroud and the Houston Texans struggled to find any offensive rhythm. The offensive line struggled in pass protection and the receiving core without Nico Collins and Stefon Diggs was limited. Joe Mixon carried the ball 24 times for 106 yards a touchdown as the lone bright spot.
Even with all the difficulties, the difference in this game may have been field goals. Ka’imi Fairbairn missed two kicks– one that would have given Houston a 10-0 lead to end the first half, and one that would have cut the Jets lead to 14-13 late in the fourth quarter. A Davante Adams touchdown sealed the deal, and New York snapped a five-game losing streak. The Jets won 21-13.

NBA
Four NBA games took place last night. Let’s recap ‘em all:
The Houston Rockets were surprise winners over the Dallas Mavericks. Jalen Green scored 23 and Alperen Sengun recorded a double-double and the young Rockets defeated Luka and the Mavs 108-102. During the loss, new Maverick Klay Thompson became just the sixth player all-time to make 2,500 three pointers.
Devin Booker was the leading scorer in the NBA last night, dropping 40 points against the Clippers at the brand-new Intuit Dome. The Suns were red-hot in the third quarter, making 15 consecutive baskets to overcome a 21 point deficit. Royce O’Neal added 21 off the bench as the Phoenix Suns beat LA 125-119.
One night after his worst professional game, Victor Webanyama had one of his best. Wemby became just the third player ever with multiple 5×5 games– just look at this box score… 25 points, 9 rebounds, 7 assists, 5 steals, and 5 blocks. Chris Paul added a double-double with 19 points and 10 assists and the San Antonio Spurs defeated the Utah Jazz 106-88.
Things are not good in Milwaukee. The Bucks are now 1-4 on the year after the Memphis Grizzlies crushed them 122-99 last night. Giannis Antetokounmpo had 37 points on just 22 shots, but none of his teammates had more than 12 in support. On the other side, seven Grizzlies scored in double-figures, including a double-double for Wake Forest legend Jake LaRavia. But the star of the night was Ja Morant. The electric point guard led the way with a 26 point-14 assist-10 rebound triple-double. Oh, and he threw an alley-oop while sitting down:

NHL
And of course, we’ve got highlights from the world of hockey:
Alexander Ovechkin is getting closer and closer to history. With two goals last night, the Washington Capitals legend is now just 37 away from breaking Wayne Gretzky’s all-time scoring record. Ovi and the Capitals beat the Canadiens 6-3.
Speaking of goals, the Hurricanes scored three times in less than a minute! Carolina cruised to an 8-2 victory over the Boston Bruins.
An interesting baseball stat for you– a player named Will Smith has won each of the last five World Series. Well, San Jose Sharks rookie Will Smith kept the good vibes going last night, scoring his first two career goals and leading the Sharks to a third straight victory.
And last but not least, enjoy this vintage Sidney Crosby overtime winner. One of the greats, and he’s still got it:
VINTAGE SID 😍

TRIVIA
When Shohei Ohtani wins the NL MVP later this year, he’ll become the 9th baseball player of all-time with three MVPs and a World Series ring. Can you name the other eight? Hint: six are Hall of Famers and two played in the 21st century
Answer revealed at the end!
NOTEWORTHY NEWS
Well, the MLB offseason wasted no time getting started: the Atlanta Braves have traded outfielder Jorge Soler to the Los Angeles Angels for pitcher Griffin Canning. It’s both a money-saving deal for Atlanta and a low-risk high-reward acquisition. Meanwhile, the Angels acquire some Soler power to help improve one of the league’s worst offenses.
Just a few days after dropping 50 points, Orlando Magic star Paolo Banchero has been diagnosed with a torn oblique. Banchero will be out for a minimum of one month, but he’ll likely miss more time. The news is disappointing both for the Magic and for fans of entertaining basketball, as Banchero is one of the league’s fastest-rising stars.
After over four decades in the broadcast booth, Bob Costas announced he is retiring from play-by-play duties. A member of the Baseball Hall of Fame, Costas will continue to appear on MLB Network as a host and analyst.
