The Ides of March are approaching...

Good Morning! Here’s what happened in the world of sports on Wednesday, February 26.

NBA

Another day in the NBA! Two scores stand out from Wednesday’s action:

  • Jalen Brunson took over in the fourth quarter. He scored 12 of his 34 points in the final six minutes of the game, leading the New York Knicks to a 110-105 win over the slumping Philadelphia 76ers.

  • Did anyone see this coming? The Detroit Pistons have won their eighth game in a row, their longest winning streak since 2008. Last night saw the Pistons dominate the Boston Celtics 117-97. Malik Beasley led the way off the bench with 26 points, while Cade Cunningham added 21 points and 11 assists.

NHL

You know the drill– three games last night in the NHL, so we’ve got three recaps:

  • The Winnipeg Jets won their 11th-straight game, taking down the Ottawa Senators 4-1.

  • Nathan MacKinnon scored two goals on the power play and the Colorado Avalanche beat the New Jersey Devils 5-1.

  • Conor Garland scored two goals– including the game-winner in overtime– to lead the Vancouver Canucks to a 3-2 win over the LA Kings.

COLLEGE BASKETBALL

What a strange year for the ACC. On one hand, Duke may be the best team in the entire country. On the other, the once-storied conference may only have three teams (Duke, Louisville, and Clemson) make it to the tournament this season. Wake Forest, one of many ACC bubble teams, gave another confounding performance last night, falling 83-75 at home to a Virginia team that came into the game with a losing record. A disappointing year for the Demon Deacons, who continue to come up short. Technically every team is alive if they win the conference tournament, but this is a very uninspired group of basketball teams at the moment. Let’s move onto something fun, shall we?

  • In addition to those incredible finishes, we had a very notable score from the SEC. Vanderbilt may have secured an at-large bid to March Madness after an impressive 86-84 win over (12) Texas A&M. A great upset by the Commodores.

SOCCER

The United States lost 2-1 to Japan in the SheBelieves Cup. It’s the first loss in the tenure of manager Emma Hayes, but only a minor setback for the number one women’s team in the world.

TENNIS

I’ll let my friends at the Tennis Channel write this section, because the caption of this one says it all:

NOTEWORTHY NEWS

Paul George announced he is taking a break from podcasting, choosing to focus on his injury rehab and helping the 76ers make the playoffs. Yes, this is a real story.

Penn State pass rusher and potential number one pick Abdul Carter has a stress fracture in his foot. Carter is currently weighing his options, deciding between preventive surgery and other suggested methods from doctors to heal the injury.

We heard about the potential tush-push ban earlier this week, but more NFL rule changes may be on the way. From tweaks to overtime, electronic first-down rulings (finally!), and re-imagining the onside kick, there could be some impactful changes.
