The best dunk that didn't count
Good Morning! Here’s what happened in the world of sports on Wednesday, January 15.
COLLEGE BASKETBALL
Let’s get into the action, shall we?
(2) Iowa State took care of business at home against (9) Kansas. The Cyclones won 74-57. Likewise, (6) Tennessee beat (23) Georgia 74-56.
UMass took on Fordham yesterday and made an unusual form of history. The two teams combined for 79 fouls and 122 free throw attempts! After they cleared all the carange, Massachusetts won 120-118 in triple-overtime.
Wake Forest guard Hunter Sallis absolutely took over down the stretch. In a close game against Stanford, Sallis led all players with 30 points, leading the Demon Deacons to a 80-67 victory. But Sallis’ former teammate was the star of the night. Down one against Virginia, Boopie Miller came up with a bit of magic at the buzzer:

NHL
A rare evening of just two games on the schedule in the NHL. So I’ll tell you about both of them:
The Buffalo Sabres beat the Carolina Hurricanes 4-2. Ryan McLeod had his first career hat trick in the victory.
Connor McDavid continued his scoring streak with two more goals last night, leading the Edmonton Oilers to a 5-3 win over the Minnesota Wild.
NBA
Basketball? Basketball:
Josh Hart had a triple-double and Jalen Brunson scored 38 points, leading the Knicks to an overtime win against the 76ers.
Golden State escaped a thrilling game against Minnesota with a 116-115 victory. Steph Curry had 31 points with seven three-pointers, including this clutch bucket down the stretch.
Nets fans, close your eyes. The Clippers beat Brooklyn 126-67 last night. At one point, LA led by 64 points! Two professional basketball teams, and that’s the real-life result.
The Memphis Grizzlies beat the San Antonio Spurs yesterday, but this play that didn’t count is all that anyone is talking about:
One of the BEST DUNKS you'll EVER see (that didn't count).

TENNIS
The Australian Open keeps moving along, with plenty of great matches. But today, I’m going to let this stat speak for itself:
The future to the present.
Jakub Mensik and Joao Fonseca are the first two teenagers to defeat top-10 opponents at the same Grand Slam since Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray at Wimbledon 2006 🤯

Amazing, and a third teen may join that duo– American Learner Tien is currently scheduled to take the court at 4:30 AM EST against (5) Daniil Medvedev. I won’t be staying awake to watch the match, but I will eagerly check the score as soon as I’m up!
NOTEWORTHY NEWS
Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers has declared for the NFL Draft. Ewers had quite a college career, transferring from Ohio State to the Longhorns and leading his team to the college football playoffs in back-to-back seasons. We’ll see what the future holds for Ewers in the pro game. For Texas, the door is wide open for the quarterback everyone has been asking for: Arch Manning, it’s your time to shine.
The Pittsburgh Penguins have made the surprising decision to place goalie Tristan Jarry on waivers. Jarry was the starter in Pittsburgh for the last four seasons, but has struggled mightily in 2024-25.
And finally, Neymar is in talks with three different MLS clubs, including the Chicago Fire. The Brazilian superstar currently plays in Saudi Arabia, but a move to the states has been rumored for a while. Take this headline with a grain of salt, though, because the soccer transfer market is constantly changing.
