The Ben Mathurin Game

Good Morning! Here’s what happened in the world of sports on Wednesday, June 11.

NBA FINALS

After a rough game two, Tyrese Haliburton responded at home last night in Indiana with 22 points, 11 assists, and nine rebounds. But it wasn’t Haliburton who made the difference during a crucial game three. Third-year guard Bennedit Mathurin had the game of his life when his team needed him the most. Mathurin was the game’s leading scorer in just 22 minutes off the bench, dropping 27 points on 9-12 shooting. The explosive young guard out of Arizona looked calm and in control whenever he was on the ball, and his offensive outburst was the separator for Indiana. Really the entire Pacers bench played well, including TJ McConnell, who added 10 points and five assists. On the other side, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander scored 24, Jalen Williams had 26, and Chet Holmgren finished with 20 points. Lu Dort knocked down four threes, too. But OKC turned the ball over 19 times and allowed Indy to pull away late in the fourth quarter. It was an uncharacteristic performance by the number one seed from the West, who for the first time in a while looked less confident their opponents. In the end, the Indiana Pacers beat the Oklahoma City Thunder 116-107 and claimed a 2-1 series lead in the NBA Finals. Who saw this coming?
