Super Bowl week begins
Good Morning! Here’s what happened in the world of sports on Monday, February 3rd.
NBA
No drama yesterday, just basketball being played on the court. Here are the highlights:
Congratulations to Devin Booker, the new all-time leading scorer in Phoenix Suns franchise history. Booker led Phoenix with 34 points in the record-breaking game, but former Sun/current Trail Blazer Deandre Ayton spoiled the night with 25 points, 20 rebounds, and a 121-119 overtime victory.
Pistons vs Hawks. Game tied at 130. And Trae Young has the ball…
COLLEGE BASKETBALL
A big rivalry win on the women’s side, as (14) NC State beat (10) Duke 89-83. Aziaha James led the Wolfpack with 36 points.
We had some notable scores on the men’s side, too:
For those that haven’t kept up with the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks, you missed quite a game last night– watch this half-court shot to end overtime against New Orleans:

The game of the night, however, was at Allen Fieldhouse. After two extremely disheartening losses, (16) Kansas responded with a great showing against (8) Iowa State. The Jayhawks got back in the win column with a 69-52 victory and displayed some great hustle along the way:

NHL
There was only one game yesterday in the NHL. Nashville scored 47 seconds into the third period and tied the game 2-2. Then Ottawa took over. The Senators scored three unanswered goals to win the game 5-2.
NOTEWORTHY NEWS
Star defensive end Myles Garrett has requested a trade from the Cleveland Browns. Not a surprising development, but the Garrett sweepstakes immediately becomes one of the top stories of the NFL offseason.
The other NFL news from yesterday– the Los Angeles Rams have informed Cooper Kupp that he will be dealt from the team this offseason. It’s the end of an impressive run in LA for the former third round pick, including a Super Bowl victory and an offensive player of the year award. Kupp posted this statement to Twitter/X yesterday reflecting on the news. Just a thought, but maybe LA will trade their 31-year old star to Dallas for 25-year old standout CeeDee Lamb?
Longtime Florida State head coach Leonard Hamilton will be leaving his position at the end of the season. After a 23-year run in Tallahassee, Hamilton joins a growing list of veteran ACC coaches to step down in recent months.
Major League Baseball has fired one of their top umpires, Pat Hoberg. An investigation revealed Hoberg had shared a betting account with a friend who bet on baseball. While Hoberg himself had not wagered on the game, apparently Hoberg had hampered the investigation by deleting messages and trying to cover it up. A real shame for the sport, and another incident added to the growing list of pro sports gambling scandals.
