Steph Curry does it again
Good Morning! Here’s what happened in the world of sports on Thursday, February 27.
NBA
Thursday was all about the superstars in the NBA:
Zion Williamson recorded his first career triple-double with 27 points, 10 rebounds, and 11 assists. He led the Pelicans to a 124-116 win over the Phoenix Suns.
It’s always a treat when Giannis duels Jokic, and last night in Milwaukee was no exception. While Jokic dominated with yet another triple-double, Giannis scored 28 points and brought down 19 rebounds, leading his team to a 121-112 victory.
Anthony Edwards was ejected in the third quarter, but it may not have made a difference against the new-look Lakers. LeBron, Luka, and Austin Reaves scored or assisted on 102 points last night… the Timberwolves scored 102 as a team. LeBron led the way with 32 and 17 as LA continues to win, this time 111-102.
Even with all those gaudy numbers, no one was better yesterday than Steph Curry. The Golden State Warriors legend and greatest shooter of all-time went off for 56 points and 12 three-pointers. A few notes on an otherworldly performance:
Curry ended the first half with this ridiculous three-quarter-court heave at the buzzer. He followed that by outscoring the entire Orlando team 22-21 in the third quarter.
Damian Lillard is second all-time with 14 games of 9+ three-pointers… after last night, Steph is first with 45!
We might need to create a new holiday– last night was the third time in his career where Steph made double-digit threes and scored over 40 points on February 27th. One of those games was nine years ago, when Curry hit one of the greatest (and maybe my favorite) shots in NBA regular season history: the “double-bang” in overtime against the Oklahoma City Thunder.
But if you ask the man himself, I bet he’d tell you this was the most important stat of all: Golden State beat the Orlando Magic 121-115, and are 7-1 since acquiring Jimmy Butler at the trade deadline…
WOMEN’S COLLEGE BASKETBALL
(24) Florida State trailed (3) Notre Dame 29-14 on the road midway through the second quarter. But the visitors fought back, beating the Fighting Irish 86-81 and handing them a second consecutive loss. National Player of the Year candidate Hannah Hidalgo was held to just 4-18 shooting, and her talented backcourt teammate Olivia Miles was just 3-7. Elsewhere, (16) Duke defeated rival (8) North Carolina 68-53, 15) Kentucky crushed (11) Tennessee 82-58, and (20) Alabama upset (7) LSU 88-85 in overtime. Last night was yet another reminder of the depth in women’s college basketball this season– it’s unlike any year we’ve seen before.
MEN’S COLLEGE BASKETBALL
(15) Michigan saw Michigan State’s buzzer-beater last night and decided it looked fun. That’s my theory, at least… watch this game-winner against Rutgers:
MICHIGAN WINS IT AT THE BUZZER ‼️‼️

NHL
A lot of teams played hockey last night. A lot of players scored goals. None of them compare to this one:
GOLF
Yesterday at the Cognizant Classic, Jake Knapp became the 15th golfer in PGA history to shoot under 60. He even had an eagle putt on the 18th hole that would have tied the all-time record of 58, set by Jim Furyk. "I thought I played well," said Daniel Berger, who’s tied for second place and four shots back of Knapp, "But then someone shot 59."
NOTEWORTHY NEWS
Excluding young players who have not qualified for free agency, the Chicago White Sox have just two players under contract past this season. One is Luis Robert, who is coming off an injury-plagued 2024 and will likely be traded as soon as he proves that he’s healthy. The other is Andrew Benintendi, who was hit by a pitch yesterday and will miss the next four to six weeks due to a broken hand. It’s unlikely the Sox will be worse in 2025 than their historical performance from a year ago… right?
According to the Pat McAfee Show, Travis Kelce will not be retiring this offseason. Travis sent Pat a text message to read on air, part of which read: “Got a real bad taste in my mouth with how I played in that last game and how I got the guys ready for battle. I can’t go out like that!!!!”
