Staying inside and going all the way home
Good Morning! Here’s what happened in the world of sports on Tuesday, July 8.
MLB
Baseball! Baseball! Read all about it!
AL all-star Cal Raleigh hit his 36th homer of the year last night, breaking Ken Griffey Jr.’s record for the most homers by a Mariner before the all-star game. Raleigh and the Mariners fell to the Yankees 10-3 however, as all-star Aaron Judge hit a longball of his own.
Make it TEN wins in a row for Toronto! The Blue Jays overcame a lengthy rain delay to beat the White Sox 6-1. No one is hotter right now than the leaders of the AL East, who are now one win away from tying their franchise record win streak.
Clayton Kershaw claimed he hadn’t heard of Brewers rookie Jacob Misirowski before they faced off last night in Milwaukee. Afterwards, the Dodgers legend had more to say; “I know him now, huh? That was unbelievable. It was really special. I mean, everything. Obviously the velo, but he’s got four pitches, commands the ball and made it -- I mean, I don’t know how you hit that, honestly.” Shohei Ohtani tagged The Mis for a leadoff homer, but the Brewers starter turned things around and gave up just three more hits, striking out a whopping 12 Dodgers in his six innings of work. Thanks to their new fireballer, Milwaukee beat LA 3-1.
Our pitching performance of the day, however, goes to Brayan Bello. The young Right Sox right hander struck out ten and gave up just five hits, completing his first career complete game. Boston beat Colorado 10-2.
What a day for inside-the-park home runs! Lawrence Butler ran all the way around the bases on the very first pitch of the game last night. The Athletics hit five homers– including a traditional one over the fence by Butler– in a 10-1 walloping of the Braves.
But back to the aforementioned inside-the-park home run… you saw Butler’s gambit on the first pitch of the game. May I interest you in Patrick Bailey on the last pitch?
That’s the great thing about the game of baseball. Every day, you’re guaranteed to see something you’ve never seen before…
Today is the first day in MLB history to feature both a leadoff inside-the-park HR (Lawrence Butler) and a walkoff inside-the-park HR (Patrick Bailey).

TENNIS
Tuesday was a day for the favorites at the All England Club. Top-seed Aryna Sabalenka had to mount a small comeback, but otherwise it was fairly smooth sailing for the top seeds in the quarterfinals. (2) Carlos Alcaraz rolled by Cam Norrie to set up a semifinal clash against American (5) Taylor Fritz. Sabalenka, meanwhile, will face off against (13) Amanda Anisimova, who had a little trouble closing out her otherwise dominant victory. Another day of action begins in a few moments!
NOTEWORTHY NEWS
Unless you’re passionate about free agency hypotheticals, yesterday was a fairly slow news day… go watch some tennis!
