Snowballs and buzzer-beaters
Good Morning! Here’s what happened in the world of sports on Thursday, November 20.
NFL
I could try to tell you about the snow game between Pittsburgh and Cleveland last night… or I could let Browns quarterback Jameis Winston do it:

Nick Chubb ran for a touchdown with just under a minute remaining and the Cleveland Browns upset the AFC North leaders 24-19. This game had multiple lead changes, acrobatic catches, costly turnovers, and, of course, lots of snow. In the end, one of the strangest games of the year ended with an unlikely winner– and no one enjoyed themselves more than Jameis Winston. Although they’re 8-3, the Steelers have scored just one touchdown in their last two games.
NBA
Four NBA games last night, so get ready for four recaps:
The Toronto Raptors beat the Minnesota Timberwolves 110-105 at home. RJ Barrett scored 31 points, and Scottie Barnes added 17, wearing special glasses in his first game in over a month since his orbital fracture.
San Antonio outscored Utah 41-29 in the fourth quarter en route to a 126-118 victory. Veteran Harrison Barnes led the Spurs with 25 points and 10 rebounds.
There’s a dangerous duo forming down South… LaMelo Ball had 35 points and nine assists and Brandon Miller dropped 38 with eight 3-pointers. Ball and Miller led Charlotte to a 123-121 overtime victory over the Detroit Pistons.
LeBron James had 31 points for the Lakers last night, including this awesome dunk. Anthony Davis added 39 points of his own. And yet LA lost to the Magic 119-118, with neither player the star of the game. Davis missed two huge free throws, setting the stage for Orlando’s Franz Wagner:
37 PTS and the victory for the Magic in LA!

NCAA BASKETBALL
The upset of the day was Drake working over Miami 80-69. Keep your eye on the Bulldogs out of the Missouri Valley conference. But the game of the day was in the Bahamas between (13) Baylor and (22) St. John’s. These two squads battled for an entire game plus two overtimes. With 18 seconds remaining, it looked like the Red Storm had finally pulled away– they led 98-93. But after a Baylor three-pointer and two missed free throws by St. John’s, the Bears had one last chance:

NHL
Three notable scores from the ice:
The Boston Bruins won their first game since firing their head coach, taking down the Utah Hockey Club 1-0. Interim coach Joe Sacco begins his tenure with a victory.
St. Louis scored a goal just 11 seconds into their game against San Jose. Both teams scored in the middle of the game, and then the Sharks scored a goal with only 9 seconds remaining to send the game to overtime. That’s something you don’t see everyday… however strange way they got there, the Blues eventually won 3-2 in a shootout.
How does 13 goals in a game sound? For the Columbus Blue Jackets, it sounds like a victory. Columbus and Tampa Bay combined for six goals in the second period alone before the Blue Jackets scored to win the game 7-6 in overtime.
NOTEWORTHY NEWS
It’s no surprise, but Aaron Judge and Shohei Ohtani were named the 2024 AL and NL MVPs. Judge and Ohtani were each unanimous winners, just the second time in baseball history where both league MVPs received every first-place vote. It’s the second MVP honor for Judge, who joins five other legendary Yankees as multiple MVP winners. This is not only Ohtani’s third MVP, it’s his third unanimous MVP. Shohei joins Frank Robinson as the only baseball players in history to win the MVP in both leagues. As you can see, we could go on and on about the greatness of these two superstars. Congrats to each of them on a fantastic season!
Two injury updates– Dallas Mavericks star Luka Doncic will be out for at least a week if not more due to a wrist injury. And Washington Capitals star Alexander Ovechkin has a fractured fibula and will miss 4-6 weeks. Wishing both a speedy recovery.
The number one recruit in the country for college football has committed to the University of Michigan. Bryce Underwood, a quarterback who had previously committed to LSU, has announced he will stay in his home state and play for the Wolverines next season.
And finally, while it’s not official, there’s a new format that may be coming to the NBA all-star game. The proposal is a four-team, “pickup style” tournament with shorter games played as first to 40 points. Whatever the game ends up being, you’ll be able to watch it on February 16 in San Francisco.
