Shootin' hoops

Good Morning! Here’s what happened in the world of sports on Monday, February 10.

NBA

Hey Basketball, did you hear the news? Football is done, hockey is on a break, and baseball spring training doesn’t start for another week. This is your moment!

  • Luka Doncic made his Lakers debut last night, and even Dirk Nowitzki was in the building to see it. Playing restricted minutes in his first game back from injury, Luka looked right at home in the purple and gold. His first basket was a step-back three. He nailed a Dirk fadeaway. He threw a beautiful full-court pass to his new teammate, LeBron James. And the Lakers beat the Pacers by so much that Luka was able to rest for the fourth quarter. Really, it was hard to script a better debut.

  • Sorry you have to follow that Mavs fans, but your game is up next on the recap lineup. Dallas went back-and-forth in an awesome battle with the Sacramento Kings last night. We don’t have much to talk about today, so I’ll let you watch this impressive end-of-game sequence for yourself. Great shotmaking from the vets Klay Thompson and DeMar DeRozan:

  • Now we head over to San Antonio, where they’re building something pretty special. Just look at this line the new Spurs duo put up last night: Victor Wembanyama had 31 points, 15 rebounds, and three blocks. De’Aaron Fox matched him with 30 points and six assists. San Antonio took care of the Washington Wizards 131-121.

  • How about the new duo in the Bay? Steph Curry had a season-high 38, Jimmy Butler added 20, and the new-look Warriors beat the Bucks 125-111. Curry and Butler are now 2-0 as teammates.

  • The Nuggets destroyed the Trail Blazers 146-117 last night, which sets up an old segment that we haven’t had a chance to feature in a little while. It’s time for for Look What Nikola Jokic Just Did! (he also scored 40 points, but this shot is arguably more impressive)

MEN’S COLLEGE BASKETBALL

Breaking news (but not really if you’ve been watching them play): UNC is officially not good at basketball this year. The Tar Heels dropped to 14-11 on the season after a blowout loss at (23) Clemson. Viktor Lakhin led the Tigers with 22 points and the home team followed up their upset over Duke with an 85-65 victory against the other Tobacco Road school.

(6) Houston took care of business against Baylor, beating the Bears 76-65. Five different Cougars scored double-digit points in the win.

WOMEN’S COLLEGE BASKETBALL

(8) Kentucky was upset 66-57 by Ole Miss last night. The Rebels held Wildcats superstar Georgia A’Moore to just 15 points.

Auburn almost made it two-for-two in SEC upsets, but (16) Oklahoma’s Payton Verhulst made two free throws with four seconds remaining to give the Sooners a 73-71 victory.

NOTEWORTHY NEWS

Instead of the traditional all-star game, hockey’s 4 Nations Face-Off begins tomorrow. The best players from Finland, Sweden, the US, and Canada will play three games each before a winner-take-all final. Depending on if anything crazy happens tomorrow, the Remix will provide a quick preview of this unusual midseason tournament.

It’s almost baseball season! Are you not excited yet? Watch this–
