Setting up the semis
Good Morning! Here’s what happened in the world of sports on Wednesday, July 9.
MLB
Another day of Major League Baseball action…
Trouble in Tinsel Town? After a Brewers comeback win in extra innings, the Dodgers have now lost six games in a row. It’s their longest losing streak since 2017.
Philly had no trouble scoring runs yesterday in San Francisco. Bryce Harper hit a home run and three doubles and Kyle Schwarber capped off a seven-run fifth inning with a three-run dinger. The Phillies beat the Giants 13-0!
We’ll end with a rundown of stars who hit home runs… James Wood led the Nationals, rookie Jac Caglianone blasted one 466 feet and veteran Salvador Perez followed for the Royals, established stars Mike Trout and Ronald Acuña Jr. knocked the ball out of the park, and Yankees all-star Jazz Chisholm swatted two longballs. Oh, and each of them won their games! A little something for everyone this morning.
TENNIS
Upset alert! Unseeded Belinda Bencic is through to the Wimbledon semifinals for the first time in her career, taking down the impressively talented 18-year-old (7) Mirra Andreeva 7-6, 7-6. The new mom was extremely grateful to be back at the top of the game and reflected on it afterwards: "I'm very proud, actually. All my career, I didn't say it a lot to myself, but after having Bella, I really say it to myself every day. We are just enjoying life on tour with Bella, traveling. It's been beautiful to create these memories together. And obviously, to play great is so amazing, but for me, it's a bonus. I'm generally just really happy to be able to play again.” She’ll take on Iga Swiatek this morning, who continued her impressive run with a straight sets win over Liudmila Samsonava.
On the men’s side, the two favorites took care of business and set up a must-see semifinal duel. (1) Jannik Sinner was simply too much for (10) Ben Shelton, defeating the American 7-6, 6-4, 6-4. And while (6) Novak Djokovic was tested early and often by (20) Flavio Cobolli, the young Italian couldn’t keep up with the seven-time Wimbledon champ. Keep an eye on Djokovic the next few days, however, as he took a nasty fall towards the end of his win. He’ll need to be at his very best to take down Sinner tomorrow.
NOTEWORTHY NEWS
Major League Baseball will use the automatic balls and strikes system during next week’s all-star game. Under the ABS system, teams get two challenges per game, to be used by hitters, catchers, or pitchers immediately after the umpire calls a ball or strike. If the challenge is successful, the team gets to keep it going forward. Is it necessary for an exhibition game? Not even a little bit. But I guess we should get used to the sight of robots taking over…
The Yankees have released former batting champion DJ LeMahieu. He was taken out of the starting lineup a few days ago and apparently New York decided the veteran wasn’t a good fit as a bench bat. They’ll eat the remaining $22 million on LeMahieu’s contract, which was set to run through the end of next season. A big shakeup in the Bronx– get ready for another big move at the deadline to supplement this one.
After signing a new two-year, $145 million contract extension, Devin Booker surpassed Shai Gilgeous-Alexander for the highest annual salary in NBA history. I think he’s happy in Phoenix.
