Champs, touchdowns, and one huge upset

Good Morning! Today is Monday, September 9. Here’s what happened over the weekend in the world of sports.
NFL
Football is back! In case you missed week one, The Remix is here with all the big moments and stories:
Saquan Barkley was the star on Friday night in Brazil. The new Eagles running back scored three touchdowns in the 34-29 Philly victory over Green Bay. For the sake of all you Giants fans out there, I won’t mention how many yards they ran for against Minnesota. Or the score of their game. Sorry New York.
The Tennessee Titans were up 17-0 on a rookie quarterback… and then the Bears defense turned it up on a notch. Chicago scored on a blocked punt and a pick-six, coming back to beat the Titans 24-17.
If you entered an NFL survivor pick ‘em pool, there’s a good chance you picked the Cincinnati Bengals. That’s one way of saying no one expected them to lose 16-10 to the New England Patriots. Bengals QB Joe Burrow is now 1-4 in season openers.
Welcome back Jim Harbaugh! The new Chargers head coach fared much better than his former employer Michigan over the weekend, as LA took down the Raiders 22-10 behind a strong run game and sound defense. Classic Harbaugh football.
He’s back! Ezekiel Elliot ran for 40 yards and a touchdown and the Dallas Cowboys cruised to a 33-17 victory over the Cleveland Browns. While Dallas looked dominant, things look pretty bad in Cleveland. The Browns had 11 penalties, averaged 3.3 yards per play, and Deshaun Watson threw two interceptions.
The weekend ended with a classic on Sunday Night Football. Matthew Stafford and Cooper Kupp looked like their Super Bowl winning selves against the Lions, connecting for 14 catches, 110 yards, and a touchdown. The Lions got the last laugh, however, winning 26-20 on an overtime touchdown from David Montgomery. I sincerely hope these two meet again in the playoffs.
One more time for good measure...

NCAA FOOTBALL
Boy, what a weekend of football… there were a lot of great games on Saturday:
GAME OF THE WEEKEND
A week ago, Notre Dame (5) was the big winner in college football. Oh, how quickly things change. The Fighting Irish were stymied by the Northern Illinois Huskies, losing 16-14 on a field goal with 31 seconds left. It’s a massive blow to Notre Dame’s playoff chances, and just as massive a victory for NIU. Elsewhere in Indiana vs Illinois matchups, IU beat Western Illinois 77-3. As one former Hoosier always reminds me, anyone can beat anyone on any given day!
RANKED LOSSES:
Syracuse beat ACC rival Georgia Tech (23). Transfer QB Kyle McCord is the real deal for the Orange, who held on for a 31-28 victory.
Iowa State took down rivals Iowa (21) 20-19. In a back-and-forth defensive battle, the Cyclones kicked a game-winning field goal as time expired. The Cyclones get bragging rights over the Hawkeyes!
Kansas (19) lost 23-17 on a visit to Illinois. The Illini start the year 2-0, while the Jayhawks will likely drop out of the top-25.
(14) Tennessee trounced (24) NC State 51-10 in Charlotte, NC. This section is usually reserved for victories by unranked teams, but the Wolfpack were beaten so badly I felt it was necessary to include them.
Finally, shoutout to Boise State, Arkansas, and Tulane, who were super close to pulling off ranked upsets of their own. Despite losing, I felt like their efforts deserved to be included anyway!
REMIX THREE STARS:
Quinn Ewers (and Texas): How ‘bout them Longhorns? Number three Texas stormed into Michigan (10) and trounced the defending champs. Ewers led the way with 246 yards passing and three touchdowns. Just listen to Matthew McConaughey talk about the poise of the QB.
Dylan Raiola (and NOT Colorado): Freshman quarterback Raiola led the Cornhuskers to a dominant 28-10 win over Colorado. Raiola not only looks like Patrick Mahomes, he’s starting to play like him.
Northern Illinois! That’s right, the Huskies earned a double-feature in today’s Remix. Just listen to NIU’s head coach on the field after the win:
This is what it's all about.

TENNIS
Aryna Sabalenka and Jannik Sinner are the 2024 US Open champs! Here’s how the action played out over the weekend:
Hometown favorite Jessica Pegula fought hard and should hold her head high, but this match was Sabalenka’s to win. The most powerful player on tour has become more consistent and learned to channel her emotions positively on court. Frankly, it’s made Sabalenka unbeatable.
On the men’s side, the drama came during Friday’s semifinals. Jannik Sinner beat Jack Draper in a brutal three hour match that saw both players struggling physically. Then, Taylor Fritz outlasted fellow American Francis Tiafoe in five sets. In the final, Sinner showed once again why he is the best player in the world. Playing against a fiery crowd and a determined Fritz, Sinner hunkered down and took care of business. If I sound a bit like a broken record, it’s because this played out the same way each Sinner match has played out since the finals in Cincinnati– there’s just no room for error when you play the young Italian. Even when he falls down during a point:

MLB
Now that football is here and taking up all the space, Monday is going to be a bit lighter on baseball highlights. Nevertheless, here are some of the more notable moments from the weekend in Major League Baseball:
I’ve run out of words to describe the New York Mets… they hit a walk-off home run on Friday night to win their eighth game in a row. New York’s NL East rival had a walk-off of their own yesterday, as the Braves beat the Blue Jays 4-3. At the end of the day on Sunday, the two teams were tied for the last NL Wild Card. Yeah, these last few months are going to be fun.
Shohei Ohtani keeps getting closer to history. He hit his 46th home run yesterday and his now just four homers and four stolen bases from the first ever 50-50 season. Oh, and the Dodgers have the best record in baseball.
Diamondbacks outfielder Pavin Smith ended the weekend with a bang. Smith hit a grand slam, a three-run homer, and a solo home run in Arizona’s 12-6 win over the Houston Astros.
NOTEWORTHY NEWS
One of the stranger stories of the weekend comes from Miami. Dolphins wide reciever Tyreek Hill was arrested as he made his way to the stadium for the game. Hill was released after a few minutes of being in handcuffs, and he scored on an 80-yard touchdown pass in Miami’s win. But as Tyreek said after the game, "Right now, I'm still trying to put it all together ... I still don't know what happened."
Kendrick Lamar announced he will be performing at this year’s Super Bowl halftime show. Should be quite a show February 9th in New Orleans.
Two big contracts from over the weekend: Jamaal Murray signed a four-year, $208 million extension with the Denver Nuggets. And about an hour before kickoff, the Cowboys reached an agreement with quarterback Dak Prescott on a four-year, $240 million deal. Dak is now the highest-paid QB in NFL history.
Two big injuries from the weekend: Packers quarterback Jordan Love has a sprained MCL that will keep him out for a few weeks. In the WNBA, Star forward Angel Reese announced she is out for the rest of the season. Her season may be over early, but it was still a fantastic debut campaign for the rookie.
Alex Morgan’s final game became the first women’s sporting event broadcasted on multiple channels in the United States on Sunday evening. Number 13 for her entire career, Morgan played 13 minutes before she left the pitch for the last time.
Longtime MLB shortstop Elvis Andrus retired on Friday. Best known for his time on the Texas Rangers, Andrus was a productive all-around player throughout his 15-year career.
TODAY’S BIG GAMES (all times Eastern)
MLB: Marlins @ Pirates, 6:40 PM; Orioles @ Red Sox, 7:10 PM
This is the last week every MLB team is eligible for Big Games– The Remix is going to focus on the the playoff races in this section. But for tonight, an AL East rivalry headlines the action. It’s also Paul Skenes day! The rookie phenom might do something special against the 54-89 Marlins…
NFL: Jets @ 49ers, 8:20 PM on ABC/ESPN
Aaron Rodgers made his infamous Jets debut on Monday Night Football one year ago, while San Francisco’s last game was their heartbreaking loss in the Super Bowl. Two teams with lofty playoff goals look to start off strong.
