Beat the Chiefs at home? UnLikely...

Good Morning! Here’s what happened in the world of sports on Thursday, September 5th.

NFL

After a brief weather delay, the NFL could not have asked for a better opening game. The Kansas City Chiefs beat the Baltimore Ravens 27-20 last night in a thriller that came down to the final play. Here’s how it happened:

  • Chiefs rookie WR Xavier Worthy is already a difference maker. He ran for Kansas City’s first TD of the year, before catching the winning touchdown pass from Patrick Mahomes late in the second half.

  • Reigning MVP Lamar Jackson continues to be one of the most electric players in football. The Ravens QB was 26 of 41 passing for 273 yards and a touchdown. He added 122 yards rushing. But there was one throw Lamar would like to do-over…

  • Down seven with 10 seconds left, the Ravens had two plays from the Chief’s 10-yard line to send the game to overtime. First, Jackson misfired on a throw to a wide-open receiver. Then, on the last play of the game, he connected with tight end Isiah Likely. Likely already had nine catches for 111 yards a touchdown, and it looked like he made the play of the game as time expired. See for yourself how close he was:

MLB

Not too much action last night in Major League Baseball, but there are a few highlights you should know about. And if you don’t have enough football and tennis, every single series in the big leagues this weekend is a must-watch:

  • Giants catcher Patrick Bailey drove in all three runs for San Francisco, including the winning one on a walk-off double against the Diamondbacks.

  • Rookie and top prospect Rhett Lowder registered his first career big-league victory, as the Reds beat the Astros 1-0. Lowder was helped by some stellar defense.

  • The Braves lost, and are now tied with the Mets for the final NL wild card spot. Mark your calendars: New York visits Atlanta on the 25th.

  • If you’re wondering why the Tigers game hasn’t been mentioned yet, I saved it for the play of the day (below). Trust me, you want to see what happened…

TENNIS

Another day, another set of fantastic matches at the US Open:

NOTEWORTHY NEWS

Legendary soccer player Alex Morgan announced her retirement with this heartfelt video. One of the greatest goal scorers and most popular players in American soccer history, Morgan also announced she is pregnant with her second child. She’ll play one last game on Sunday for the San Diego Wave before hanging up the jersey. Congratulations to Alex Morgan on a fantastic career!

When asked to name the worst NBA player of all-time, Shaquille O’Neal had a quick answer: Rudy Gobert. Shaq has long been critical of Gobert, but the Frenchmen believed this was a step too far, responding with a tweet that expressed his disappointment. If only these two could settle their feud on the court…

For the first time since 2004, the country of San Marino has won a soccer game! The last-ranked team in the world according to FIFA, San Marino beat Lichtenstein 1-0 yesterday. It’s just the second win in the country’s history– the other, and I hope you’re sitting down for this, was a 1-0 win against Lichtenstein.

PLAY OF THE DAY

Bases loaded, full count, two outs, down three in the ninth inning. It’s the moment every kid dreams of. Parker Meadows at the plate…

That might be the swing of the season! With the 4-3 win, the Tigers are just five games out of a wild card spot.
