A thrilling Labor Day weekend

Good Morning! Today is Monday, September 2nd. Here’s what happened over the weekend in the world of sports.
NCAA FOOTBALL
What a great opening weekend for college football! There’s a whole lot of action to cover, so let’s get right to it:
RANKED MATCHUPS:
The statement of the weekend came from Atlanta, as top-ranked Georgia demolished Clemson 34-3. Only time will tell if this result says more about the dominant Bulldogs or a Clemson team that has lost its luster each of the past few seasons.
Only two other ranked matchups took place this weekend: Notre Dame rolled in to College Station and beat Texas A&M 23-13. The Fighting Irish look legit, with a dominant defense and well-rounded offense. And last night, USC won a thriller against LSU by scoring a game-winning touchdown with ten seconds left. USC quarterback Miller Moss had an exceptional performance in the Trojan victory. LSU coach Brian Kelly was “angry” in his postgame press conference.
How about the Hurricanes? Miami went to Gainesville and chomped the Gators 41-17. The scoring began with a short touchdown catch by Cam McCormick, a ninth-year tight end. That’s right– ninth year! It’s early, but with Florida State and Clemson both starting the year 0-1, Miami has staked a solid claim as the best team in the ACC.
Every other team ranked in the top 25 was victorious over the weekend. No major upsets!
GAME OF THE WEEK:
I owe an apology to the Vanderbilt Commodores. Vandy beat a favored Virginia Tech team in overtime on Saturday. QB Diego Pavia led the way with 190 yards passing and 104 yards rushing– a true dual threat.
PLAYER SPOTLIGHTS:
Boise State running back Ahston Jeanty ran for 267 yards and six touchdowns
Arizona wide receiver Tetairoa McMillan had 10 catches for 304 yards and four touchdowns
Ole Miss QB Jaxon Dart threw for 445 yards and six touchdowns… in the first half!
Coming in with the backups during a blowout, Texas QB Arch Manning– nephew of Peyton and Eli– threw his first collegiate touchdown pass.
GOLF
Scottie Scheffler won the $25 million prize and the PGA Playoffs, capping off an incredible season. Here are the best moments from a weekend that, because of the scoring system, lacked a lot of drama:
Sahith Theegala had a great tournament, finishing in solo third place. He also would have won the sportsmanship award– Theegala self-reported a potential violation that ultimately cost him two strokes and a tie for second. Props to Theegala for putting honestly and integrity first. There’s no doubt we’ll be rooting for him even more going forward.
He won by six strokes, but it wasn’t always easy for Scheffler. Take a look at this crazy hole where he practically stood inside of a tree. Or, if you want to feel good about your own golf game, watch this one:

TENNIS
The US Open continues to excite, with fantastic matches all day in New York. Here’s what stood out– we’ll have a full quarterfinal once the matchups are set tomorrow:
We will have a new champion in both men’s and women’s singles! Alexei Popyrin beat Novak Djokovic in four sets on Friday night, highlighted by this must-see forehand and celebratory roar. Popyrin fell to American Francis Tiafoe in the next round, but his win ensured that no member of the Big Three (Djokovic, Federer, and Nadal) will win a Grand Slam for the first time since 2002. And Coco Gauff struggled mightily in a loss to fellow American Emma Navarro last night, recording 19 double faults. Navarro capitalized on the shaky performance, and looks like a force to be reckoned with in her first US Open quarterfinal.
The match of the tournament may have been Francis Tiafoe vs Ben Shelton on Friday. The two Americans dueled for four hours, before Tiafoe eventually won in five sets. American tennis is in a really good place right now.
MLB
It’s officially September, which means the end is near for the 2024 baseball season. Most of the playoff races are close to settled, but we’ll check in on the close ones later this week. For now, here are the best moments from the weekend:
LA’s Big Three went back-to-back-to-back on Saturday against the Diamondbacks. Ohtani, Betts, and Freeman led the Dodgers to a series victory over Arizona, creating much needed separation in the AL West. The Dodgers did lose Clayton Kershaw to another injury, as the future hall of famer might be at the end of his storied career.
Detroit Tigers starter Tarik Skubal is the first pitcher to reach 200 strikeouts on the year. He’s wrapped up the Cy Young– can Detroit build a contender around their ace for 2025?
Some of you may remember this famous play, when J.T. Snow swooped in and saved a young bat boy from a play at the plate during the World Series. Well, that boy was Darren Baker, son of legendary manager Dusty. And he made his major league debut yesterday, recording a single for the Washington Nationals.
I don’t really know why the Milwaukee Brewers are good this season, but maybe one reason is Willy Adames. The shortstop hit a home run in his fourth-straight game on Sunday. Plus, the Brewers called up a guy actually named Brewer. Must be fun to be a winning ball club.
Finally, the Chicago White Sox set a franchise-record with 107 losses in one season. They are just 13 away from tying the MLB record set by the expansion-team 1962 Mets.
WNBA
Friday night was the marquee matchup between Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese. As usual, Clark was ready for the spotlight: she scored a career-high 31 points and added 12 assists, as the Fever won by double-digits.
The rookie were back in action on Sunday– Reese set the WNBA record for most rebounds in a season, while Clark and the Fever beat Dallas 100-93. Safe to say the WNBA’s future is in good hands.
SOCCER
Three games of note from the Premier League over the weekend, plus a milestone in La Liga:
Down 2-0 in the 86th minute, Bournemouth stormed back to beat Everton 3-0. A wonderful win for the Cherries.
It’s a tale of two Manchesters at the moment. Erling Haaland had another hat-trick for Man City in a 3-1 victory over West Ham on Saturday. That was the good result. Yesterday, Man United was dominated in a 3-0 defeat against Liverpool. Not as good.
Kylian Mbappe scored his first goal for Real Madrid. There’s no telling how many he’ll score by the time his career is over.
NOTEWORTHY NEWS
Didn’t we cover everything already? This Remix is long enough! Go enjoy the top plays…
TOP PLAYS OF THE WEEKEND
10: Our top plays begin with New York Liberty guard Sabrina Ionescu, who beats the shot clock from the floor!
9: Squeezing in two incredible displays of athleticism from the US Open, as Alex de Minaur shows off the wheels, as does Grigor Dimitrov.
8: You make a top play, The Remix will find you. Check out this long-range goal from Maryland soccer
7: I couldn’t decide which home-run robbery was better: Blake Perkins in centerfield for Milwaukee or the Royals rightfielder Garrett Hampson.
6: Lorenzo Musetti goes around the net at 1000 miles per hour on this point, although he would end up losing the match.
5: The definitive best home run robbery from the weekend comes in at number four, as Michael Harris turned into Spiderman.
4: Georgia’s thumping of Clemson was highlighted by this acrobatic this acrobatic Malaki Starks interception.
3: Brenton Doyle! The diving catch is impressive, but the throw for the double play makes this one of the plays of the year in Major League Baseball.
2: Not sure how this interception isn’t number one… how about the 360 backwards leap from the Robert Morris safety! SportsCenter had this as the Top Play of the day, and I don’t blame them….
But this ridiculous snag by Kyron Hudon is the NUMBER ONE play from the weekend, and potentially the entire football season:

TODAY’S BIG GAMES (all times Eastern)
MLB: Dodgers @ Diamondbacks, 4:10 PM; Red Sox @ Mets, 7:10 PM
After four games in LA, the Dodgers and D-Backs travel to Arizona to continue their intradivision matchup. If last weekend was any indication, this will be another fun series. And two teams trying to stay alive in the playoff race go head-to-head in New York. The Mets are 1.5 games out of the last NL Wild Card, while Boston is 4.5 behind in the AL.
TENNIS: US Open round four, beginning at 11 AM on ABC/ESPN/ESPN+
Eight round four matches close out the long Labor Day weekend before the quarterfinals begin tomorrow. None are bigger than the last match scheduled for the day, as number one seed Jannik Sinner takes on American Tommy Paul.
NCAA FOOTBALL: Boston College @ Florida State, 7:30 PM on ESPN
After being upset last week in Ireland, will Florida State start the year 0-2? Can Boston College shock the nation? This is the last major college football game on a Monday night until December– let’s hope it’s a good one.

Have a great Monday!
*an earlier version of The Remix incorrectly stated USC kicked a game-winning field goal. That mistake has been corrected.
