Cousins leads a dramatic comeback
Good Morning! Here’s what happened in the world of sports on Monday, September 16.
NFL
The Atlanta Falcons stunned the Philadelphia Eagles last night, stealing a 22-21 victory on a touchdown drive in the final minute. Here’s how it all happened:
Philadelphia led 7-6 at halftime. Both teams struggled to score against strong defenses, although the star running backs were effective in the ground game. Bijan Robinson finished the day with 14 carries and 97 yards for Atlanta, while Eagles running back Saquan Barkley carried the ball 22 times for 95 yards.
The Eagles controlled the second half of the game with long, time-consuming drives. Jalen Hurts led a 17-play, 70-yard drive that took almost 10 minutes and ended in a touchdown. With 6:47 left in the fourth quarter, Philly led 18-15.
After stopping Bijan and the Falcons on fourth down, the Eagles drained more time from the clock. However, Barkley dropped what would have been a game-sealing first-down reception and Philadelphia kicked a field goal from the 10-yard line.
Kirk Cousins and the Falcons got the ball with no timeouts, down six, and 1:39 remaining. In just three plays, Atlanta was in the red zone. On 3rd and five with 34 seconds remaining, Cousins connected with Drake London in the corner of the end zone to tie the game. Younghoe Koo’s extra point put the Falcons ahead, and defensive superstar Jessie Bates sealed the win with an interception on Philly’s desperation drive to end the game. It was a disappointing night for the Eagles, and an exceptional statement victory for the Atlanta Falcons:
THE FALCONS TIE IT WITH 34 SECONDS LEFT.

There were plenty of dramatic moments on the baseball diamond last night, too:
The Brew Crew beat the Phillies 6-2 last night in a battle of NL division leaders, and now Milwaukee’s magic number is down to 2. A confounding team that just continues to win baseball games.
A huge swing in the NL wild card race, as the Braves were crushed 9-0 by the Dodgers, while the Mets beat the Nationals on a walk-off in the 10th inning. Going purely on vibes, I can confidently say that no team wants to face New York in the postseason. They still have work to do, though– all eyes will be on Atlanta when these two clubs face off next week.
No team is finishing the year stronger than the Detroit Tigers. Detroit overcame a Bobby Witt grand slam to beat the Royals 7-6 in Kansas City. They’ve now won seven of their last ten games, and are just 1.5 games out of the third AL wild card spot.
Cleveland scraped by the Twins 4-3, thanks to an 8th inning two-run homer from Kyle Manzardo. With the Kansas City loss and their win over Minnesota, the Guardians have extended their lead in the AL Central to five games.
Luis Arraez’s streak of plate appearances without a strikeout ended at 141, but the Padres won a big game over the Houston Astros 3-1. San Diego kept pace with the competition, and remains firmly in control of their playoff destiny.
NOTEWORTHY NEWS
Sidney Crosby has signed a two-year extension to stay with the Pittsburgh Penguins through the 2026-27 season. One of the greatest hockey players of all-time, Crosby has played in Pittsburgh his entire career. I really can’t believe Sid the Kid is 37 years old.
The Carolina Panthers have benched former first overall pick Bryce Young. The young QB has struggled mightily, as have the Panthers. Things are really not going well right now for Sir Purr and the Panthers faithful.
Other big quarterback news from the Big 10- Wisconsin QB Tyler Van Dyke is out for the season with a torn ACL. A tough break for the Badgers, attempting to rebuild in their second year under head coach Luke Fickell. And the Michigan Wolverines have named Alex Orji their starting quarterback ahead of a crucial matchup this weekend against USC. A talanted dual-threat QB, Orji replaces senior Davis Warren.
Kansas City running back Isiah Pacheco will be on injured reserve after suffering a broken fibula in the Chiefs win on Sunday. It’s been a rough start to the year for NFL injuries, and the fallout from week two has been notable– AJ Brown, Deebo Samuel, and Cooper Kupp are among the other notable names who are set to miss some time.
