Upsets galore in the NFL
Good Morning! Today is Monday, September 16. Here’s what happened over the weekend in the world of sports.
NFL
Week two in the NFL gave us some great moments and surprising results. Now presenting, The Remix Six (we’ll see if the name sticks):
How ‘bout the Saints? New Orleans came into Dallas and rolled the Cowboys 44-19. Alvin Kamara scored four touchdowns to lead the way in this one. Even more impressive– through two games, Derek Carr and the New Orleans offense have scored on every single possession.
We continue with the road upsets, as the Las Vegas Raiders overcame a 10-point fourth quarter deficit to stun the Ravens 26-23. Baltimore is now 0-2 to start the season.
The Minnesota Vikings upset the San Francisco 49ers for the second year in a row, winning an exciting game 23-17. In addition to strong defense, Minnesota triumphed thanks to this 97-yard touchdown pass from Sam Darnold to Justin Jefferson:
We're really about to put an active player in Canton.

The Buccaneers went to Detroit and upset the Lions 20-16. Baker Mayfield has found a home in Tampa Bay, who look better than anyone could have expected, and have started the season 2-0.
Kyler Murray and rookie Marvin Harrison Jr. were unstoppable against the Los Angeles Rams. The duo connected for 130 yards and two touchdowns as the Arizona Cardinals dominated LA 41-10.
Finally, the Kansas City Chiefs did what they do best, winning a close game 26-25 against the Cincinnati Bengals. Harrison Butker kicked the game-winning field goal as time expired, as the Chiefs overcame Patrick Mahomes’ second-lowest total passing yards in a game. Despite the loss, the Bengals still took home the award for play of the weekend… check this out:

NCAA
There were a lot of college football games that weren’t very close over the weekend. The Remix is going to focus on the few that were:
The Wildcats won on Friday, but the game was real tough for the Wildcats… Kansas State took down Arizona 31-7 in a battle of ranked Big 12 teams.
Mizzou beat Boston College in the other matchup of ranked teams from the weekend. It was a hard-earned victory for the Tigers, who actually dropped one spot in the AP poll to number seven.
Perhaps the most shocking story in college football this year comes from Tallahassee, as Florida State is now 0-3. The Seminoles lost 20-12 at home against Memphis on Saturday.
Finally, the game of the weekend was in South Carolina, as the Gamecocks missed a game-tying field goal as time expired. LSU scored the winning touchdown after a controversial call nullified a pick-six, but no one in Baton Rouge is complaining about the victory.
THREE STARS OF THE WEEKEND:
Arch Manning: QB Quinn Ewers left in the second quarter of the Texas game with an abdominal injury, setting the stage for the best backup in the country. All Arch did was throw for four touchdowns– plus he showed off the wheels on a 67-yard touchdown run. We never saw Peyton or Eli do anything like that…
Top-10 SEC teams: In addition to Texas, four top-10 SEC teams were winners on Saturday. Alabama, Tennessee, and Ole Miss won by a combined score of 153-16, while Georgia escaped with an ugly 13-12 win at Kentucky.
The Pac-12: Oregon State lost to Oregon, but Washington State took home the Apple Cup on a goal-line stand against Washington. Is there anything better than a post-game speech from a coach who just upset their rival school?

MLB
September is halfway over, and we are oh so close to the end of the baseball season. It was a busy weekend for many playoff teams– here’s what stood out:
As always, the Red Sox-Yankees series was full of drama. Aaron Judge broke his cold streak with two home runs (53 on the year) and New York won two out of three. All anyone can talk about, however, is Boston’s win on Saturday. Yankees ace Gerrit Cole intentionally walked Red Sox third baseman Rafael Devers with no outs and nobody on base. The strange strategy did not pay off, as Cole proceeded to give up seven runs and had one of the worst starts of his career. Too bad we’ll have to wait till next year to see this matchup again.
The New York Mets called up Luisangel Acuna, the younger brother of Braves superstar Ronald Acuna. The younger Acuna’s first major league hit was eerily similar to Ronald’s– the Mets are locked in a playoff race with Atlanta, so it’s smart to add an Acuna to provide a spark on their side of things, for once.
The Philadelphia Phillies are the first team in baseball to reach 90 wins! J.T. Realmuto delivered a walk-off single yesterday to beat the Mets 2-1 and extend Philly’s NL East division lead to nine games.
Sunday was a mixed bag for the Los Angeles Dodgers. On one hand, the LA offense exploded for seven runs in the ninth inning to beat the Atlanta Braves on Sunday Night Baseball. However, it was announced that ace Tyler Glasnow is unlikely to pitch the rest of the season due to an injured elbow. Shohei Ohtani can do everything, but can he really do everything?
Finally, Giants outfielder Heliot Ramos made history yesterday as the first right-handed batter to hit a home run in San Francisco into McCovey Cove. 24 years of Oracle Park, and the rookie makes history:
Heliot Ramos ties it up in the 9th with a splash hit!
It's the first splash hit EVER by a right-handed hitter 🤯

SOCCER
The MLS season is coming close to a conclusion. The playoffs start in just over a month, so it’s time to check in on the action.
The LA Galaxy, Inter Miami, FC Cincinnati, and the Columbus Crew are the teams that have clinched a spot in the playoffs so far. 14 of the other 25 teams will join them and advance to the postseason.
Lionel Messi is back and hasn’t missed a step. The GOAT scored two goals in his return to action for Inter Miami on Saturday, leading the best team in the league to a 3-1 victory over Philadelphia.
Across the pond in the Premier League, the season is just under way. Plenty of goals and games are to played over the next six months– for now, you should know that Erling Haaland (Manchester City) has nine goals in the first four games of the year… also this happened:
THAT IS MAGNIFICENT. 🚀
JHON DURAN WITH AN ABSOLUTE SCREAMER. ASTON VILLA LEAD 3-2.

NOTEWORTHY NEWS
Legendary Red Sox broadcaster Joe Castiglione announced he will retire at the end of this season. He’s been the voice of the Red Sox for 42 years– congratulations to Castiglione on a fantastic career.
Caitlin Clark scored a career-high 35 points last night in a win against Dallas. There’s just one week left in the WNBA regular season– good timing for this performance if you’re a fan of the Indiana Fever.
With 15 games remaining, the Chicago White Sox are just six losses away from setting the Major League record. I highly recommend this column from Jayson Stark if you want to learn more about their historic effort.
For the first time since 2017, the US has won the Solheim Cup. The top women’s golfers in Europe staged an impressive comeback on Sunday, but the US team held strong for the victory.
