A conference reborn

Good Morning! Here’s what happened in the world of sports on Wednesday, September 11.
MLB
Yesterday was a fantastic day to be a baseball fan. Here are the best moments in case you missed it:
Bowden Francis was three outs away from a no-hitter. With one swing of the bat, Francisco Lindor changed everything. The Mets shortstop hit a solo home run and broke the game open, as the Mets roared back and scored six innings in the 9th, beating the Blue Jays 6-2.
Bryan Woo had a perfect game in the seventh inning. With one swing of the bat, Fernando Tatis… well, he didn't change everything, but he did hit a home run and end Woo’s bid for perfection. Despite Tatis’ homer and a spectacular catch at the wall, San Diego lost to Seattle 5-2.
The Yankees and Red Sox each had walk-off wins in extra innings yesterday. Jazz Chisholm drove home the winning run for the Yankees, while Tyler O’Neil hit a three-run homer over the Green Monster to seal a victory for Boston.
This Dodgers-Cubs series has been spectacular, and the finale last night may have been the best game of the bunch. LA hit back-to-back-to-back home runs as part of a five-run first inning. Former Dodger Cody Bellinger led a Chicago rally, blasting a three-run bomb a few innings later. The Dodgers were holding on to a slim 8-7 lead in the 8th inning when trade-deadline acquisition Tommy Edman swatted his second home run of the day, securing an eventual 10-8 LA victory. Oh, and did I mention Shohei Ohtani? The future NL MVP hit his career-high 47th home run of the season and stole two more bases.
WNBA
A’ja Wilson set the WNBA single-season scoring record and the Las Vegas Aces took down Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever 86-75 last night. With a week to go in the regular season, let’s check in on the standings. Three teams are playing for the final playoff spot, while the rest jostle for seeding (teams in bold have clinched, italics are eliminated):
TEAM | W-L | GAMES BACK |

NOTEWORTHY NEWS
There’s a chance this news is final by the time you read this in the morning, but as of right now it’s merely a source-confirmed rumor. Like a phoenix from the ashes, the Pac-12 is back! Boise State, Fresno State, Colorado State, and San Diego State are each set to leave the Mountain West by the end of next year to join Oregon State and Washington State in the historic conference of champions. What does this accomplish? I’m not entirely sure, but it’s exciting! Who will be next to join the rebel alliance?
The tennis season never ends! Davis Cup matches are underway, and the best players in the world are representing their countries. No one is doing a better job than Carlos Alcaraz:
No way, @carlosalcaraz 😯
The Spaniard gets the home crowd on their feet!

TODAY’S BIG GAMES (all times Eastern)
MLB: Red Sox @ Yankees, 7:15 PM; Rangers @ Mariners, 9:40 PM
I don’t think I need to explain why this first game made an appearance. Late tonight in Seattle, top prospect Kumar Rocker makes his MLB debut for the Rangers. Rocker is one of five players in Major League history to be drafted in the top ten multiple times– he was the 10th pick by the Mets in 2021 but did not sign with them.
NFL: Bills @ Dolphins, 8:15 PM on Prime Video
An AFC East rivalry kicks off week two of the NFL season. Josh Allen and the Bills will try to slow down the high-powered Miami offense.
