Saquan defies gravity; College Basketball Preview
Good Morning! Today is Monday, November 4th. Here’s what happened over the weekend in the world of sports.
NFL
Ready for some recaps? Let’s get right to it:
Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills had quite a duel yesterday against the Miami Dolphins, who are playing much better football now that quarterback Tua Tagovailoa is back on the field. Unfortunately for Miami, Buffalo had the ball last in this one. Tyler Bass nailed a 61-yard kick to win the game 30-27.
How about the Detroit Lions! Once again, they look like the team to beat in the NFC. This time, Detroit went into a cold and rainy Lambeau Field and took down division rival Green Bay 24-14. An impressive victory for the Lions, who are now 7-1.
The Tennessee Titans beat the New England Patriots in overtime, but the highlight of this game came from rookie Drake Maye. Just watch how the New England QB was able to score a last-second touchdown and send this one to overtime:
Wild. Crazy. Unbelievable. Drake Maye would not be denied six points.

Speaking of overtime, the Los Angeles Rams escaped a physical game against the Seattle Seahawks with a 26-20 win. The play of the game was this 103-yard pick six by Rams defensive back Kamren Kinchens.
In case you didn’t stay up for it, Sunday Night Football was an interesting one. The Minnesota Vikings overcame two missed field goals and three turnovers to beat the Indianapolis Colts 21-13. The Colts made the decision to start veteran QB Joe Flacco instead of the still-developing Anthony Richardson. Flacco’s Colts failed to score a touchdown.
There were a few other intriguing results yesterday, but sometimes you just have to see a play to believe it really happened. That was the case during Philadelphia’s 28-23 win over Jacksonville. Saquan Barkley may have invented a new move:

NCAA FOOTBALL
The first official College Football Playoff Rankings are set to be released this evening, so we’ll spend some more time on college football tomorrow. But first, a few results that will have a key impact on what we see tonight:
Ohio State beat Penn State 20-13 thanks to a crucial goal line stand in the fourth quarter. Both Big 10 teams are now 7-1 on the season.
There were a few upsets over ranked teams on Saturday– Minnesota took down Illinois 25-17, Louisville turned the ACC race upside down with a 33-21 win against Clemson, Kansas State was shocked by Houston 24-19, and Texas A&M faltered just as they had picked up so much steam, losing 44-20 against South Carolina.
Two undefeated teams are unbeaten no longer. SMU walloped Pitt 48-25, while Iowa State dropped a last-minute stunner at home 23-22 to Texas Tech.
NBA
Instead of game recaps, how about a quick standings check?
Cleveland and Oklahoma City are the only remaining undefeated teams. Boston, Phoenix, and Golden State are right behind them with one loss apiece. No surprises so far.
Utah is the only winless team. However, Milwaukee and Philadelphia are the two teams with just one win on the season. So that’s going exactly as we all expected…
Ok, I can’t leave out one very important highlight… The Timberwolves won this game on Friday 119-116, but no one is going to remember that. All anyone will tell you is that Nuggets guard Christian Braun has made an entry in the dunk of the year contest with this poster over Rudy Gobert:

NHL
That standings check-in went pretty well… let’s try it for hockey!
After winning two games in Finland over the weekend, the defending champion Florida Panthers are leading the Eastern Conference with 19 points. Carolina, Washington, New Jersey, and the New York Rangers are right on their heels.
Out west, the Winnipeg Jets have just one loss on the season. With 22 points, they hold the best record in hockey. Minnesota and Vegas, however, aren’t far behind.
Five teams have yet to reach the 10-point mark on the season. Nashville, Philadelphia, Montreal, and Buffalo are stuck on a measly nine, while poor San Jose has just eight points so far (reminder: two points are rewarded for a win, one for taking a game into overtime).
NOTEWORTHY NEWS
Matt Chapman became the fifth active player with five or more Gold Gloves, winning the award last night as the top fielding third baseman in the National League. The other standout honoree was Guardians outfielder Steven Kwan, who became the fifth player all-time to win a Gold Glove in each of their first three seasons. You can see the entire list of winners here.
A shock result from the the Premier League, as Bournemouth upset Manchester City 2-1 on Saturday. The loss ends City’s 32-match unbeaten streak in league play, and drops them to second place in the table in this year’s competition.
The Kansas City Royals re-signed starting pitcher Michael Wacha to a three-year deal. It’s a shrewd move for the young Royals team to keep a veteran starter like Wacha around as they look to take the next step and go on a playoff run this season.
Congratulations to Vince Carter! The Toronto Raptors honored Carter by retiring his number 15 over the weekend. It’s the first retired number in franchise history:
NO. 15 FLIES HIGH ONCE AGAIN 🙌

COLLEGE BASKETBALL PREVIEW
Can you believe it? Men’s and women’s college basketball both begin tonight, with top teams in action across the country. Although every game during the season is important, I don’t believe bracketology begins until the Super Bowl. That’s when we’ve seen enough of the top teams to know who truly sits on the bubble. So in lieu of the traditional Remix Power Rankings, here are ten college basketball players you should know about. This isn’t a top ten list– rather, I believe each of these players will have a great impact on the season:
PAIGE BUECKERS (UConn)
I know I said this wasn’t the best 10 players in the country, but Bueckers would be at the top of that list, too. The fifth-year guard can do it all, and she’s leading one of the deepest UConn teams in years. Bueckers is the reason many people are picking the Huskies to win a title this season.
ALEX KARABAN (UConn)
Speaking of UConn, how about junior forward Alex Karaban? He won the national championship in each of his first two years. Now Karaban is the veteran, with goals of winning three in a row.
BRADEN SMITH (Purdue)
UConn beat Purdue and national player of the year Zach Edey in last year’s championship game. Edey left for the NBA, but the Boilermakers have a new leader in guard Braden Smith. Expectations are high for the junior as he leads Purdue against a strong Big 10 schedule.
COOPER FLAGG (Duke)
The expected number one pick in next year’s draft, Cooper Flagg is one of three star freshman on this year’s Blue Devil roster. Once again, Duke is loaded with talent at every position. But all eyes are on the ACC preseason freshman of the year to lead the way.
JUJU WATKINS (USC)
If he needs advice, Flagg might want to give JuJu Watkins a call– as a freshman last year, Watkins led USC to one of their best seasons in recent memory. The Trojans brought in two standout transfers in Talia Von Oelhoffen (Oregon State) and Kiki Iriafen (Stanford) to bolster the lineup, but this is JuJu’s team. It wouldn’t be shocking if by the end of the year, she overtakes Bueckers as the best player in the game.
MILALSYIA FULWILEY (South Carolina)
The defending national champs return almost their entire roster from last season, and the talent is so great, there’s a chance sophomore guard Fulwiley comes off the bench. And yet, she might also be the key for a back-to-back title. No player in the country is faster with the ball than MiLaysia Fulwiley, and her ability to score in bunches will allow South Carolina to grow big leads against their opponents.
GRAHAM IKE (Gonzaga)
The next in a great line of Gonzaga big men, Ike is the star of another fantastic team out west. There’s really not much else to say about Ike or this Zags team. I just didn’t want you all to be surprised when they show up as a top seed again at this year’s tournament.
LUCY OLSEN (Iowa)
Olsen was the third-highest scorer in college basketball last season at Villanova, trailing only Watkins and Caitlin Clark. After transferring to Iowa, Olsen is tasked with replacing a legend. No one expects her to replicate the magic of Clark, but this is a fascinating story to follow this season. The Hawkeyes were unranked in the preseason AP poll.
ROBBIE AVILA (Saint Louis)
We have to highlight a mid-major, right? A transfer from Indiana State, Robbie Avila followed his coach Josh Schertz from Indiana State. Schertz runs an up-tempo offense that features Avila in a big way. The bespectacled big man is ready to lead SLU back to the tournament– if you don’t know his name now, you’ll definitely know him in March.
RORI HARMON (Texas)
Last but not least, Rori Harmon returns to the Longhorns after missing last season with a torn ACL. Madison Booker led Texas to a number one seed in last year’s tournament, and now one of the best teams in the nation welcomes back Harmon, the most tenacious perimter defender in the country. Watch out for Texas to make a deep run.
So many talented players and teams I didn’t mention… Kansas, Houston, and Alabama stand out on the men’s side, while Notre Dame and LSU are teams to remember for the women. Shoutout to Hunter Sallis (Wake Forest), Georgia Amoore (Kentucky), Lauren Betts (UCLA), and Caleb Love (Arizona) who will each make plenty of highlights this season, too. Anyway, enjoy the basketball! Bracketology will be here before you know it…
