Rose leads the field in Augusta
Good Morning! Here’s what happened in the world of sports on Thursday, April 10.
THE MASTERS
Justin Rose has a three-shot lead over Corey Connors, Ludwig Aberg, and defending champion Scottie Scheffler after one round at The Masters. Rose shot a -7 (65) yesterday with eight birdies! But with Scheffler (-4), Bryson DeChambeau (-3), and a slew of other golfers lurking right behind him, this tournament is far from over. Even Rory McIlroy, who was tied with Scheffler before a disastrous final four holes dropped him four strokes, is within striking distance. It’s shaping up to be another great weekend at Augusta.
Also, how about Freddie Couples? The 1992 Masters champion became the second-oldest player to shoot under par. His highlights include this awesome shot on number 14:
Into the hole from 191 yards. Fred Couples eagles No. 14! #themasters

NBA
Anthony Edwards dropped 44 points and Minnesota crushed Memphis 141-125. With that weighty result in the books, here’s how the Western Conference standings look as we head into the final weekend of the regular season:
TEAM | RECORD | GAMES BACK |
---|---|---|
1. Oklahoma City Thunder (z) | 66-14 | - - - |
2. Houston Rockets (y) | 52-28 | 14 |
3. Los Angeles Lakers (x) | 49-31 | 17 |
4. Denver Nuggets | 48-32 | 18 |
5. Los Angeles Clippers | 48-32 | 18 |
6. Golden State Warriors | 47-33 | 19 |
7. Memphis Grizzlies | 47-33 | 19 |
8. Minnesota Timberwolves | 47-33 | 19 |
9. Sacramento Kings (p) | 39-41 | 27 |
10. Dallas Mavericks (p) | 38-42 | 28 |
OKC has clinched the one seed, the Rockets have clinched the two seed, the Lakers have clinched a playoff spot, and Sacramento and Dallas are locked in to the play-in games.
MLB
Three quick recaps for ya today:
Trevor Story’s infield single was just enough for a walk-off win in Boston, as the Red Sox squeaked by the Blue Jays 4-3.
Three different Angels hit two home runs yesterday, including Mike Trout and Taylor Ward. Jo Adell hit both of his homers in the same inning! The power surge was enough to blow out the Tampa Bay Rays 11-1. With an 8-4 record, LA’s other team is off to their best start in years.
In a game that started at midday and ended after midnight, Marcell Ozuna of the Braves hit a walk-off home run in the eleventh inning. Neither the Philadelphia Phillies nor an almost three hour rain delay was enough to stop Atlanta from their first series win of the season.
NHL
Let’s check the playoff race, shall we? The NHL has an unusual format, but what’s important is that eight teams make the playoffs in each conference. Remember, a win is worth two points in the standings, while an overtime loss counts for one. Also of note– the season is 82 games long, so there isn’t much time left for teams on the outside to make a move. :

TENNIS
There’s no use trying to explain the magic of Carlos Alcaraz. Maybe the upcoming Netflix documentary will give us a better understanding. Until the show is released, however, the first 45 seconds of this highlight video from yesterday’s match in Monte Carlo will suffice. This point is one of the more impressive feats of athleticism you’ll see all year:
NOTEWORTHY NEWS
See any great photos from The Masters so far? There’s a good chance they were taken by Hall of Famer Ken Griffey Jr, who is working as a credentialed photographer. That’s a pretty solid second career for The Kid.
The MLS is considering a switch from a summer competition to a fall-spring schedule, in line with the rest of the world’s professional soccer leagues. The change wouldn’t go into effect until at least 2027.
