Rose and Pocket Pancakes
Good Morning! Today is Monday, August 11. Here’s what happened over the weekend in the world of sports.
MLB
Settle in, we’ve got a lot of baseball to talk about after the past few days. But first a shoutout to Jen Pawol, who became the first woman to umpire an MLB game. It was a big week for umpires and fans of umpires– check out this kid at the Cardinals-Cubs game. Ok, now to the on-field action:
We’ll start with the milestones: Jose Altuve hit his 250th career home run, becoming just the 25th player in history with 250 homers and steals. Can you name the only other active player to reach those marks? That’s right, it’s Jose Ramirez. And his former Houston teammate Justin Verlander became the 10th pitcher in history with 3,500 strikeouts. Another amazing achievement in a Hall of Fame career.
From established stars to rising ones, know the name Bryan Woo. The Mariners ace is the first pitcher since Clayton Kershaw in 2019 to begin a season with 23 consecutive starts of 6+ innings. Woo is a big reason why Seattle is just half a game behind the Astros for the lead in the AL West (Big Dumper hit more home runs this weekend, too).
No team is hotter, however, than the Milwaukee Brewers. They haven’t lost a game since their manager Pat Murphy was interviewed while eating a pancake he pulled out of his pocket–
Have you ever heard of a pocket pancake?
Well now you have 🥞

The Brew Crew swept the Mets after this Isaac Collins walk-off homer. That’s nine wins in a row for the second time this season. They’re one of five franchises to never win a World Series. Just something to keep an eye on…
How about rookie pitcher Mason Fluharty? The Blue Jays reliever came into the game with a one-run lead, one out and the bases loaded in the ninth inning. He promptly struck out Shohei Ohtani and forced Mookie Betts into a groundout to third. That’s a day he’ll never forget!
And finally, a play that needs no introduction. Take a look at this one:

TENNIS
The 1000-level tournament on the face of the Sun in the sweltering heat of Cincinnati kicked off last Thursday. Round three for both the men and women begins this afternoon– I highly recommend tuning in to Tennis Channel to catch moments of magic like this one:

GOLF
Justin Rose won a thrilling FedEx St. Jude Championship after a playoff against JJ Spaun. He closed the round with six birdies over his last eight holes! Rose emerged at the top of a stacked leaderboard, just barely beating out Spaun, Scottie Scheffler, and poor Tommy Fleetwood, still in search of his first career PGA title.
FOOTBALL
We have a rule here at The Remix to ignore all preseason NFL games. That rule is going to be broken by what would have been an NFL record, courtesy of Jacksonville Jaguars kicker Cam Little:

And that’s a wrap on the weekend! We’ll end with a rare in-game interview moment that I actually enjoyed:
