Record-breaking threes and home runs galore
Good Morning! Here’s what happened in the world of sports on Thursday, March 27.
MARCH MADNESS
Four great Sweet 16 games yesterday– let’s recap ‘em:
Alabama set an NCAA tournament record with 25 three-pointers. Star guard Mark Sears made 10 all on his own! Unsurprisingly given those numbers, the Crimson Tide beat BYU 113-88.
Credit to Caleb Love and Arizona, who withstood an early second-half scoring spree by Duke and fought hard until the very end of this one. Although Love scored 35 points, Cooper Flagg and the Blue Devils proved too much. Duke won this game 100-93 and moved on to face Bama in the Elite Eight.
Florida continued their dominant season with an 87-71 victory over Maryland. Will Richard and Walter Clayton Jr. are an unstoppable backcourt duo for the Gators, and I’m not sure anyone can stop them.
For most of the night, it looked like Florida would face John Calipari and (10) Arkansas. Then the Red Raiders came roaring back. Texas Tech overcame a 16-point deficit, tying the game with under 10 seconds left on an incredible three-pointer and sending the contest to overtime. Tech advanced 85-83 in one of the best games of the tournament– watch the highlights below, and skip to 10:14 to see the moment the game flipped from a Razorbacks victory:
MLB
After working through a very frustrating hour-long outage of MLB.TV, Opening Day was as wonderful as we all imagined. Here’s who won the day:
One of the most incredible streak in sports has reached a record sixth season– that’s the number of consecutive Opening Days that Tyler O’Neill has hit a home run! O’Neill and the Orioles hit six dingers as a team and cruised to a 12-2 win over Toronto.
Is it too late to add MacKenzie Gore to my Cy Young predictions? The young Nationals starter struck out 13 Phillies yesterday in six innings, allowing just one hit. Unfortunately for Gore, Philly beat Washington 7-3 in ten innings.
A banner was unfurled, Freddie met Gibby, and the defending World Series champion Dodgers took the field in style. Naturally, Shohei Ohtani hit a home run (apparently Tom Hanks loved it) and LA beat Detroit 5-4.
We’ve got our first walk-off! Raise your hand if you had the Miami Marlins…

NBA
Indiana scored a franchise-record 162 points last night! The Pacers beat the Wizards with 14 different players scoring at least three points and nine different players reaching double-figures. Tyrese Haliburton knocked down seven three-pointers and led his team with 29 points.
The Lakers led the Bulls 115-110 with 12.6 seconds left. They led 117-116 with 3.1 seconds left. And somehow, Los Angeles lost the game, thanks to this magical half-court heave by Josh Giddey:
NHL
The St. Louis Blues won their eighth game in a row, taking down the Nashville Predators 3-2.
Tampa Bay destroyed Utah 8-0, the most lopsided NHL game this season.
NOTEWORTHY NEWS
Austin Wells became the first catcher to leadoff Opening Day with a home run. His homer on the first pitch proved to be the difference, as the Yankees beat the Brewers 4-3.
