Rams take down the Vikings

Good Morning! Here’s what happened in the world of sports on Thursday, October 24.

NFL

The Minnesota Vikings traveled to LA to take on the Rams on Thursday Night Football. When I wrote the preview last night, I described Los Angeles as “undermanned.” Then, they announced receivers Cooper Kupp and Puka Nacua would return to action after both had been out injured. Let’s just say they made an impact:

  • With his offensive weapons finally healthy, Matthew Stafford was on top of his game. The Rams QB threw for 279 yards and four touchdowns, including this one where he escaped from a surefire sack. Nacua had 106 yards receiving while Kupp caught a touchdown pass. The Rams looked as dangerous as ever.

  • As usual, Justin Jefferson was the star for Minnesota. The star wideout had eight catches for 115 yards. However, the Vikings were held to just six points in the second half. The Rams handed Minnesota their second-straight loss, winning this game 30-20.

  • Of course, this game was not without controversy. Down eight with just under two minutes remaining, the Vikings began a drive inside their own 10-yard line. The game ended when Sam Darnold was sacked for a Rams safety– however, a clear face mask penalty was not called on the play. Even with the penalty, the Vikings would still had to drive down the entire field with no timeouts, but it’s always disappointing when a great game ends on a missed call:

NBA

Four games in the Association last night:

  • Although Jordan Poole scored 17 points in the first quarter, the Boston Celtics rolled to a 122-102 victory over the Washington Wizards. Jaylen Brown had 27 points and Jayson Tatum had 25 for Boston.

  • The Dallas Mavericks are 1-0 to start the season, beating the San Antonio Spurs 120-109 in their season opener. New Maverick Klay Thompson began his Dallas career with 22 points, and went 6-10 from three. Also, Luka Doncic remains incredible:

NHL

Two great stories from last night’s NHL action:

NCAA FOOTBALL

Syracuse quarterback Kyle McCord put up video game numbers in last night’s game against Pitt. Unfortunately, it was the kind of video game where you may have set the difficulty level too high. McCord threw five interceptions in a disaster of a game for the Orange, including three pick-sixes in the first half. Pitt led 31-0 at halftime, and stayed undefeated on the season with a dominant 41-13 victory. The ball was quite literally bouncing the Panthers’ way:

HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT THE WORLD SERIES?

In the past week, I’ve learned there are two opposite groups with strong feelings about this World Series (excluding fans of the Dodgers and Yankees, who are simply excited to be here). Some neutral fans are excited about the historic nature of the matchup. Others dislike both franchises and are rooting for both teams to lose. Jayson Stark and Grant Brisbee of the Athletic have captured the two sides beautifully– you can read Stark’s excited preview about the matchup here, or check out Brisbee’s “Hater’s Guide to the World Series” at this link. I highly recommend reading each of them.

But whether you hate both teams or tolerate one of them (no one likes both), there’s no denying that this is a historic World Series. This Dodgers-Yankees matchup has given us a rare championship where the participants are without a doubt the best teams in the game. Plus, with Aaron Judge and Shohei Ohtani, we get to see the MVP of each league showcase their talents on the biggest stage. I hope you enjoy this final 10 days of the baseball season. And as always, The Remix will be ready to recap each game– you won’t miss a single moment.
