Rams survive the rain in San Francisco
Good Morning! Here’s what happened in the world of sports on Thursday, December 12.
NFL
If you like rain and defense and low-scoring football games… well, you have a very unique taste in entertainment. Lucky for you, there was last night’s football game between the Los Angeles Rams and San Francisco 49ers:
This game had no touchdowns! A miserable rain came down for the majority of this one, and slowed most attempts by either offense to generate anything positive. The final score was 12-6, with six field goals counting for every point.
One team did just enough to win, however, and that was the visiting Rams. Puka Nacua was spectacular in this one, catching seven passes for 97 yards. And LA running back Kyren Williams carried the ball a whopping 29 times, good for 108 tough yards between the tackles.
There was just one turnover on the night, and in the end, it was the key to the Rams victory. Brock Purdy overthrew his receiver and was picked off in the endzone– San Francisco didn’t get the ball back until it was too late. It may be too late to salvage their season, too; the 49ers fall to 6-8 with the loss:

COLLEGE BASKETBALL
South Bend was host to a marquee matchup lat night, as (2) UConn visited (8) Notre Dame. With Paige Bueckers leading the way, the undefeated Huskies were slim favorites heading into this one… but Thursday was the Hannah Hidalgo show. The Fighting Irish guard dropped 29 points, 10 rebounds, and eight assists, leading her team to a 79-68 win. If you didn’t know about Hidalgo before, well, she’s proven yet again that she’s one of the best basketball players in the country. This was a massive win for Notre Dame, and a good test for a UConn team with championship aspirations. Expect both squads to make a deep run this March.
NHL
It’s hockey time! What a crazy night it was on the ice…
Three different players scored hat tricks last night! Jake Guentzel of the Tampa Bay Lightning scored three in an 8-3 win over the Calgary Flames, Bryan Rust scored three as part of a 9-2 Penguins victory over the Montreal Canadiens, and Scott Laughton scored FOUR to lead the Philadelphia Flyers over the Detroit Red Wings. You gotta see Laughton’s first goal– it’s one of the best things I’ve seen all season:

NBA
It wasn’t the NBA Cup, but there were three games played yesterday:
The Celtics rolled to another victory, this time beating the Pistons 123-99. Sixth Man of the Year candidate Payton Pritchard led the way for Boston with 27 points.
Amidst rumors that Miami might trade Jimmy Butler, the Heat won their fourth game in a row. Bam Adebayo had 21 points and 16 rebounds, helping Miami to a 114-104 win over the Toronto Raptors.
And finally, the Sacramento Kings escaped the New Orleans Pelicans 111-109. Domantas Sabonis had a monster night with 32 points and 20 rebounds.
NOTEWORTHY NEWS
Apparently yesterday was National Introductory Press Conference Day around the sports world. Bill Belichick took questions as the new head coach of the North Carolina Tar Heels, Willy Adames was all smiles in his new San Francisco Giants uniform, and Juan Soto spoke about growing a New York Mets dynasty. ‘Twas a day full of positivity and optimism.
