Putting the "foot" in football
Good Morning! Here’s what happened in the world of sports on Thursday, September 26.
NFL
If you like field goals and long drives that end without touchdowns… you’re in the minority, but you were also very happy watching last night’s game between the Giants and Cowboys. Here are the highlights from the 20-15 Dallas victory:
The Giants played a pretty decent game– they just couldn’t get into the endzone. Unfortunately for New York fans, settling for five field goals is not usually a winning formula. While we’re on the topic, a well-deserved shoutout is due for Cowboys kicker Brandon Aubrey. He missed a 51-yard kick at the end of the game, but made this one from 60 look easy.
A week after a frustrating performance against Baltimore, Ceedee Lamb was back to his pro bowl form. He got loose on a long touchdown pass early in the game and finished with 98 yards receiving.
Both Malik Nabers and Micah Parsons left the game early due to injury. Parsons said afterwards that x-rays came back negative, so hopefully the star of the Dallas defense is back next week. Nabers, however, suffered a concussion, and the young Giants wide receiver may end up missing more time.
MLB PLAYOFF RACES
It’s amazing how much can happen in one day:
The New York Yankees are champions of the AL East! Gerrit Cole received a standing ovation as he left the mound and Aaron Judge hit his 58th home run of the year, his fifth straight game with a homer. Literally everything went right for New York as they cruised to a 10-1 win over the Baltimore Orioles.
For the 11th time in 12 seasons, the Los Angeles Dodgers are champions of the NL West! LA beat the Padres 7-2, but it wouldn’t be a true victory for the Dodgers without a little bit of Shohei magic. Not only did Ohtani break open a 2-2 game in the 7th inning with an RBI single, he became the first player since 2001 and only the 11th since 1947 to record 400 bases in a season. There are no more words to describe how good this guy is at baseball.
And now for an AL wild card update- the Royals took care of business against the Nationals, winning 7-4. Our team the Detroit Tigers won a tight one 4-3 over the Rays. And the Minnesota Twins fell a game behind the others, losing a heartbreaker in 13 innings to the Miami Marlins.
MLB END-OF-YEAR STORYLINES
Plenty of important baseball things happen outside the playoff races. Let’s take a moment to acknowledge them:
The White Sox did it again, beating the Los Angeles Angels for the third straight day. Chicago closed out the sweep with a 7-0 victory, and prolonged a record-breaking 121st loss for at least one more day.
Charlie Blackmon’s parents threw out the first pitch to celebrate his last week as a Major Leaguer… and then he hit a home run! How beautiful is the game of baseball?
Finally, we’ve come to the Oakland Athletics (I made an error on Monday– the A’s played their final home game yesterday, not last weekend) The scenes in the Coliseum were truly impressive, as the fans honored their city about as well as any fan base could. Rickey Henderson and Dave Stewart threw out the first pitch and Barry Zito sang the national anthem. After a back-and-forth affair, Oakland won their final home game ever. For the first time all season, they played in front of a sell-out crowd. Postgame, there were speeches and celebrations of the past and all sorts of emotions. And when everything was over, you couldn’t help asking yourself two important questions– why are they leaving? Who actually thinks this is a good idea? From Catfish Hunter to Moneyball to Dallas Braden’s perfect game, the A’s have left an incredible legacy in Oakland. I’ll leave you with this video, from the local broadcast of the penultimate game on Wednesday:
"To a lot of the folks in this town, Jenny, this is religion. This Coliseum has been their cathedral, where they have come and made peace." - Dallas Braden
"I hope you felt that tonight was about you, much like tomorrow will be as well. Where we will gather, we will say goodbye,… x.com/i/web/status/1…

GOLF
The US won each of the five matchups on day one of the President’s Cup. Despite the lopsided score, there was no lack of competition on the course in Montreal. The highlight of the day came on the seventh green, as world number one Scottie Scheffler and Tom Kim exchanged some trash talk after each made long birdie putts. With a lopsided score and a fierce battle on the greens, we’ll just have to see how the weekend plays out
NOTEWORTHY NEWS
Daniel Ricciardo announced he is leaving team RB in the F1 racing circuit and possibly retiring. While I don’t know exactly what all of this means, it is a big enough headline to become the first official mention of F1 in The Remix.
In other retirement news, Derrick Rose announced his NBA playing days are over after 16 seasons. The first overall pick out of Memphis in 200, Rose was a star in Chicago. He won the rookie of the year award in 2008, and in 2010 Rose became the youngest player ever to win MVP. Rose has a complicated legacy in the league, as his career was impacted greatly by multiple knee injuries. There is no doubt, however, that a healthy Derrick Rose playing in his prime was one of the greatest point guards of his generation.
