Ovechkin scores two more
Good Morning! Here’s what happened in the world of sports on Monday, November 18.
NBA
Three spectacular finishes to NBA games lead off today’s issue of The Remix:
Damian Lillard made a triumphant return to the court last night for the Milwaukee Bucks after missing three games with a concussion. After a clutch Giannis block, Dame’s layup with 3.9 seconds left was enough to beat the Houston Rockets 101-100. It was a miserable start to the season, but Milwaukee has now won three of their last four games.
The Hawks and the Kings had quite a duel last in Sacramento. Keon Ellis dropped 33 points and nine three-pointers for the Kings, but Dyson Daniels came up with a key defensive stop in the final seconds to lead Atlanta to a 109-108 victory.
Monday night in LA was the first meeting between James Harden and Steph Curry as the two most prolific three-point shooters of all-time. Ironically, the difference in this one may have been free throws. Golden State went 9-19 at the line and trailed Harden’s Clippers for practically the entire game. Gary Payton stole the ball to set up himself and Curry for two chances at a last-second game-tying three… neither shot would go down. Behind Norman Powell’s 23 points, Harden’s 16 assists, and a few clutch plays by Amir Coffey, LA escaped with a 102-99 victory. I can tell you firsthand that the brand-new Intuit Dome is a really, really awesome place to watch a sporting event:
No bad seats in this arena!
NHL
We’ve got three hockey highlights this morning:
The last-place Columbus Blue Jackets stunned a struggling Boston Bruins team last night, winning 5-1 on the road at TD Garden. Boston fans booed the home side throughout the loss.
Macklin Celebrini scored a beautiful game-winning goal in overtime and the San Jose Sharks took down the Detroit Red Wings 5-4. The first overall pick is settling in nicely in his debut season.
He did it again! Alexander Ovechkin scored two more goals last night, inching ever closer to the all-time scoring record. The NHL’s leading scorer this season led his Capitals to a 6-2 win over the Utah Hockey Club… although the 39-year old Ovechkin did leave the game early with an injury. We’ll see if he’s forced to miss any time.
NFL
The Houston Texans walloped the Dallas Cowboys last night by a score of 34-10. It was a one-sided affair that, if it wasn’t a stand-alone game on Monday night, we wouldn’t spend much time on. Shoutout to Joe Mixon, though, who ran for 109 yards and three touchdowns. Otherwise, I believe the game is best summarized by this play:
TEXANS FORCE TWO FUMBLES ON THE SAME PLAY.
AND RETURN IT FOR THE TD!

NCAA BASKETBALL
We’ve got one recap from the men’s game and one from the women’s…
This may be the best Gonzaga basketball team in recent memory. The Bulldogs put up 80 points on the road against a tough San Diego State team, beating the Aztecs 80-67. Graham Ike scored 23 while Ryan Nembhard added 19 and dished out 10 assists. SDSU had beaten the Zags in their last two meetings, but this year they couldn’t match the depth and talent of their opposition. It’s unlikely that any Gonzaga opponent will be able to this season.
Number 22 Illinois hosted Le Moyne last night, and it wasn’t very close. The Illini won 94-25, holding the Dolphins to just two points in the second quarter. Sometimes a score is just so remarkable you have to tell someone about it. We’ll see how Illinois holds up against stiffer competition as the season goes forward.
SOCCER
The US Men’s National team got off to a roaring start in their first competitive match with new boss Mauricio Pochettino in charge. Christian Pulisic opened the scoring in St. Louis and the US beat Jamaica 4-2. We’ll see how the progress continues when the team gets together again in March.
NOTEWORTHY NEWS
The New York Giants have decided to bench quarterback Daniel Jones. They’ll turn to Tommy DeVito to lead the team this weekend against Tampa Bay. And if I had to put money on it, they’ll be drafting a new QB in the draft this spring.
Tough day for fans of lemonade and orange juice… the Houston Astros announced a new sponsorship for their stadium: introducing Daikin Park. Minute Maid Park is no more.
In other sports-food-sponsorship news, the Pop Tart Bowl announced three new flavors will replace Strawberry as this year’s edible mascots. I’m guessing you either care very deeply about that last sentence or you have no idea what I’m talking about. We’ll move on…
Paul Skenes and Luis Gil are this year’s winners of the MLB Rookie of the Year award. Gil took home the honors in the American League, while Skenes was named the winner from a very deep class of NL competitors.
And finally, it’s a rough season to be a college football team with an Owl mascot. Florida Atlantic fired head coach Tom Herman yesterday after a fifth consecutive loss dropped his FAU record to 6-16. Temple, Rice, and Kennesaw State have also fired their coaches this season. Hoo hoo? More like boo hoo…

Vamos, @RafaelNadal!
As you get ready to graduate from tennis, I’ve got a few things to share before I maybe get emotional.
Let’s start with the obvious: you beat me—a lot. More than I managed to beat you. You challenged me in ways no one else could. On clay, it felt like I… x.com/i/web/status/1…— Roger Federer (@rogerfederer)
