Ohtani and Judge, the biggest stars in the game

Good Morning! Here’s what happened in the world of sports on Thursday, June 26.

MLB

Another day of dazzling starting pitching… let’s talk about some games:

  • Hunter Brown dropped his league-leading ERA to 1.74, throwing seven shutout innings and striking out nine in Houston’s 2-1 win over Philadelphia.

  • Kevin Gausman and Shane Baz each went eight scoreless– Gausman’s Blue Jays beat the Guardians 6-0, while Baz and the Rays blanked Kansas City 4-0.

  • Finally, Clayton Kershaw struck out five and is now at 2,997 career Ks. There’s a chance that Kershaw is the last pitcher ever to reach the 3,000 mark, so make sure you tune into his next start and witness history. Thanks to the Dodgers ace turning back the clock and a Shohei Ohtani homer, LA beat Colorado 3-1.

NOTEWORTHY NEWS

Round two of the NBA Draft concluded last night– you can see the results here. No one really jumped out at me, but keep an eye on Maxime Reynaud (Kings) and Will Richard (Warriors).

Shohei Ohtani and Aaron Judge are the first players elected to next month’s MLB all-star game in Atlanta. As the highest vote-getters in each league, the two superstars earned an automatic starting spot. Every other position is down to the final two– you can see who is still fighting for a starting position here, including all the Dodgers.

The NHL and NHL Player’s Association have reportedly agreed to a four-year deal to extend the collective bargaining agreement to 2030. While not official, this is a big step towards avoiding a potential lockout after next year. The biggest news from the new deal? An increase from an 82 to 84 game schedule.
