Night of the Incredible Comeback

Good Morning! Here’s what happened in the world of sports on Monday, May 5.

NBA

We’ll start in Boston, where the defending champion Celtics held a commanding 20-point lead late in the third quarter against the New York Knicks. But OG Anunoby and Jalen Brunson weren’t throwing in the towel. Anunoby had 20 of his 29 points in the second half and Brunson, the newly recognized NBA Clutch Player of the Year, led a monstrous comeback. After Brunson missed a wide-open game-winner, we went to overtime. Neither team scored much in the extra period, but the visiting Knicks ended up on top, as New York stole game one with a 108-105 victory. A few notes on the epic Celtics collapse:

  • Boston led by 16 at halftime. It’s the largest blown halftime lead in franchise postseason history. Since 1997, Boston was 64-0 in the playoffs when leading by 20+ points.

  • The Celtics became the first time in NBA history to attempt 60 three-pointers in a game. They also set a record for most missed threes in a playoff game with 45!

  • With Kristaps Porzingis out sick and a historically bad night from long range, Boston still only lost by three points. It’s unlikely the Celtics shoot this badly for the rest of the series, so keep that final score in mind. But credit to the Knicks, who showed us that this matchup will be a battle until the very end.

Our second game last night was in Oklahoma City, where the Thunder hosted the Denver Nuggets. While OKC has been off for a full week, Denver was just 48 hours removed from their game seven win against the Clippers. But no matter how many times the well-rested and top-seeded Thunder staked out a double-digit lead, Denver kept clawing back. Nikola Jokic had a monstrous 42-point, 22-rebound performance and nailed a clutch three-pointer with one minute remaining to pull his team within one point. Each team made a few free throws, but with nine seconds remaining, Chet Holmgren missed both. That set up Denver’s Aaron Gordon for the biggest moment of the night:

Bang! Bang! Russell Westbrook found the open man and Gordon nailed the dagger. After that clutch bucket, all three visiting teams are leading 1-0. An incredible start to the second round of the playoffs!

NHL

Just one game on the ice last night as the Florida Panthers traveled to Toronto to take on the Maple Leafs. And while this was just game one, it appears these Leafs may have turned a corner. William Nylander scored two goals and dished out an assist, leading the home team to a 5-4 victory. Toronto led the entire way and was able to hold on despite a furious rally by the defending champs. This series could be a fun one…

MLB

Shohei Ohtani hit another home run! Been a while since I wrote that, but don’t worry he’s still very good. This wasn’t baseball’s night to shine, so we’ll keep things moving along.

NOTEWORTHY NEWS

LeBron James was out yesterday with a knee injury. Yes, the Lakers are no longer in the playoffs. But I’m referring to this tweet, where LeBron explained his injury would keep him from attending last night’s Met Gala.

Congratulations to the New York Islanders, the winners of the NHL Draft Lottery and new owners of this year’s first overall pick. I have to admit that I turned on the Draft Lottery show yesterday– it was one of the strangest things I’ve ever seen live on ESPN. Just four guys standing around a ping-pong ball machine staring at a clock.

The Baltimore Ravens released embattled kicker Justin Tucker. One of the greatest of all-time at his position, Tucker struggled this past season and was accused a few months ago by multiple women of sexual harassment.

Kenny Atkinson was named NBA Coach of the Year. In his first year in Cleveland, Atkinson led the Cavs to the number one seed in the Eastern Conference.

Finally, apologies for missing this yesterday– Sporting KC became the first team in MLS history to win a game without recording a single shot on goal! They beat the LA Galaxy 1-0.

"It means everything. Whenever the guys in the clubhouse are believing in you and they want you to take the ball and go win games, I feel like, as a pitcher, that's your ultimate goal. You want those guys to trust you and know what they're going to get out of you every night," Braves starter AJ Smith-Shawver, after taking a no-hitter into the eighth inning last night
