Never a slow day when Wemby is on the court

Good Morning! Here’s what happened in the world of sports on Monday, January 6.

NBA

Two games of note yesterday in the Association:

  • With the Kings and Heat headed to double overtime, someone needed to step up and take over. DeMar DeRozan answered the call, ending the game on a 9-5 solo run and leading Sacramento to a 123-118 victory over Miami.

  • And now, the main event. San Antonio visited Chicago last night and produced enough highlights to last an entire month. First, the Bulls won this game 114-110, with a game-high 35 points from Zach LaVine. But we’re not here for that. Take a look at cool play number one, courtesy of the big Frenchman:

Lonzo Ball got in on the fun with this ridiculous full-court pass:

Naturally, Victor Wembanyama had a few more mind-boggling moments:

But Coby White got the last laugh, first with this dunk over Wemby:

And then he drove home for the game-winning layup. I promise I’m not using these videos just to make today’s issue longer. Also a fun fact– Coby White and I have the same birthday:

NHL

Four games last night so we’re going with four recaps!

  • The last-place team in the Eastern Conference beat the first place team yesterday. Buffalo won 4-3 against Washington in a shootout.

  • Montreal was victorious in a battle against Vancouver, taking home the win 5-4 in overtime.

  • Devon Toews scored two goals and led the Colorado Avalanche to a 3-1 win against the Florida Panthers.

  • And finally, the New Jersey Devils beat the Seattle Kraken 3-2.

COLLEGE BASKETBALL

Just one game of note yesterday– Wisconsin visited Rutgers, a notoriously difficult environment for an away team. But the Badgers pulled out a victory, taking down the Scarlet Knights 75-63. I think college basketball insider/super fan Jon Rothstein summed up the victory best:

NOTEWORTHY NEWS

The Los Angeles Dodgers have traded infielder Gavin Lux to the Cincinnati Reds for a middle-tier prospect and the 37th pick in this year’s draft. A former top prospect, Lux has failed to meet the lofty expectations many once had for him. However, he’s been a solid big-leaguer and was playing better baseball at the end of last season. Regardless, for LA, Lux had become a surplus– the reigning World Series champs signed Korean infielder Hyeseong Kim last week. The Reds will most likely use Lux as a utility player, supplementing their young lineup at various positions. Overall, a solid deal for both teams.

Ahead of the playoffs this weekend, Ezekiel Elliot has signed with the Los Angeles Chargers practice squad. The running back was released by the Dallas Cowboys last week for this exact opportunity– the chance to be on a team in the postseason.

The Jacksonville Jaguars have fired head coach Doug Pederson. Not a very surprising move, given how badly things have gone for the Jags this season.
