We're talking about practice!
Good Morning! Here’s what happened in the world of sports on Monday, August 12.
MLB
A case of the Mondays in the Major Leagues, as quite a few teams put up clunkers yesterday – not everyone though, as there were a few standouts:
Welcome back Mookie Betts! In his first game in two months, Mookie hit a home run. Mookie is back playing the outfield, but he’s no longer the Dodgers leadoff hitter. That would be Shohei Ohtani, who hit his NL-leading 36th home run. LA beat Milwaukee 5-2.
The New York Yankees are tied for the AL East division lead. The Chicago White Sox own the worst record in the league. It might surprise you to hear that Chicago crushed the Yankees 12-2 last night. Anyone can beat anyone on any given day.
Christmas might be December 25th, but August 12th was a celebration of Noel. Cleveland Guardians outfielder Jhonkensy Noel hit two home runs and made a diving catch in right field, as Cleveland beat the Cubs 9-8.
The Houston Astros won their sixth game in a row, beating the Tampa Bay Rays 6-1. The hottest team in baseball right now though is the Arizona Diamondbacks. Arizona has the best record in baseball since July 1 (25-10) and they’ve won 15 of their last 18 games. At the time of publishing, however, the Diamondbacks were down 4-3 against Colorado.
This is when it really hurts The Remix not being on the west coast this week… at this moment, Blake Snell has ten strikeouts through six innings. And he’s given up zero hits. He’s also at 98 pitches, so I have no idea if he’ll be able to finish the job. The Giants and Braves are tied 0-0, too. This will either end up the most pointless recap you ever see, or a very cool in-the-moment report.
GOLF
The Wyndham Championship took place from Thursday to Sunday… for every golfer except one. Matt Kuchar, who finished in a 10-way tie for 12th place, completed the final hole of the weekend on Monday morning. Kuchar was the only player who decided it was too dark to finish their round Sunday evening in Greensboro. Monday’s session was a grand total of six minutes.
NOTEWORTHY NEWS
Shoutout to Malika Andrews, the host of ESPN’s NBA Today– Andrews was impressive in handling a small earthquake that hit during a live segment.
It’s that time of year! The AP released their preseason top 25 for the upcoming college football season. The list is a group of the usual suspects– Georgia, Ohio State, Oregon, Texas, and Alabama make up the top five. With the expanded college football playoff this season, I’d watch out for Missouri (11) and Utah (12). That’s just a taste of what’s to come– the full Remix college football preview is coming next week.
PLAY OF THE DAY
Not the strongest play of the day candidates today, but Chris Sale made a pretty nice grab:

The coolest thing I saw today was not a play, but a crowd at the Cincinnati Open. There were so many people gathered around practice court number nine yesterday, you’d think they were giving something away. But that’s the draw of Carlos Alcaraz, one of the most popular athletes in the world. I’d guess there were about 300 people gathered around to watch Carlitos rally with a hitting partner for an hour. This was for practice, mind you. We’re talking about practice. I can only imagine the frenzy when he takes the court for a real match.
TODAY’S BIG GAMES (all times Eastern)
MLB: Cardinals @ Reds, 6:40 PM; Mariners @ Tigers, 6:40 PM
Two of the best young starters in the game take the mound tonight. Hunter Greene is up against a division rival in Cincinnati, while Tarik Skubal looks to improve on his Cy Young case against the Mariners.
Well, Blake Snell just gave up a hit. First batter of the 7th inning, and Marcell Ozuna smacks a double. Great timing on that one, thanks guys.
