Mixin' it up

Good Morning! Here’s what happened in the world of sports on Wednesday, August 20.

MLB

It was a pretty good night to root for the home team… let’s run through some scores:

  • Cardinals 2, Marlins 6

  • Blue Jays 1, Pirates 2

  • Mariners 2, Phillies 11

  • Astros 2, Tigers 7

  • Guardians 2, Diamondbacks 3 (10 innings)

  • Mets 4, Nationals 5

  • White Sox 0, Braves 1

  • Yankees 6, Rays 4, (10 innings)

  • Athletics 4, Twins 2 (10 innings)

  • Rangers 6, Royals 3

  • Brewers 3, Cubs 4

  • Dodgers 3, Rockies 8

  • Reds 1, Angels 2

  • Giants 1, Padres 8

TENNIS

Defending champs Sara Errani and Andrea Vavassori fended off their more well-known challengers and won the new version of the US Open mixed doubles. Eranni and Vavassori defeated Iga Swiatek and Casper Ruud in an entertaining final, using their experience in doubles and well-practiced tactics to take down their higher-powered but slightly less comfortable opponents. After much anticipation and hand-wringing about the new format… I’d say it was a pretty solid success.

NOTEWORTHY NEWS

Coco Gauff has split with one of her coaches. Although Coco won the French Open and is ranked number three in the world, the move makes sense– she leads all players on tour in double faults, and struggled mightily with unforced errors last week in Cincinnati. However, the timing is a bit more abrupt, as the US Open begins on Sunday.

Checking in on the latest in the NFL, courtesy of Adam Schefter:

"It's been a lot, but I'll never get sick of signing them. I've waited 17 years to sign that flag in the middle, and I will never complain about doing it,” –Masters champion Rory McIlroy, who admits he bought all 1,100 flags that remained at the Augusta National shop after he won this year
