Messi and Mbappe; NBA mid-season power rankings

Good Morning! Here’s what happened in the world of sports on Wednesday, February 19.

A quick correction from yesterday– Bill Self has coached at KU since 2003, not 2023 as I accidentally stated.Thank you to everyone who pointed out the mistake– the online archive has been updated!

COLLEGE BASKETBALL

For those who are fans of watching teams on the Bubble, West Virginia won a huge game last night against Cincinnati. The Mountaineers led by nine points with 34 seconds left and barely escaped with a 62-59 win after Cincy missed a game-tying three-pointer at the buzzer.

For those who are fans of the top teams in the country, the (15) Missouri Tigers made a huge statement last night against (4) Alabama. Mizzou started hot, jumping out to a 12-0 to start the game– and the home team never looked back. Mark Mitchell scored 31 points and the Tigers beat Bama 110-98.

SOCCER

Kylian Mbappe reminded us yesterday why he is one of the best soccer players in the world. The electrifying French striker scored a hat trick and led Real Madrid to a 3-1 victory Manchester City, securing his team a spot in the next round of the Champions League.

I don’t think Lionel Messi ever dreamed he would play a soccer game in Kansas City when it was less than ten degrees outside. And yet the greatest footballer of all-time found himself in that exact position last night, applying his trade in the freezing tundra of the midwestern United States. Of course, nothing bothers Messi– he scored the game’s only goal, leading Inter Miami to a 1-0 victory.

NBA

Just one NBA game last night, a rescheduled contest due to the fires in Los Angeles. The Lakers took on the Charlotte Hornets with a fully-rested and healthy Luka Doncic. Although Luka and LeBron provided some pretty great highlights– like this awesome pass and this classic dunk– the Hornets came back from a second-half deficit to beat LA 100-97.
